Ace of Spaces by Sandra Owens features FBI agent Nate Gentry and his partner, Taylor Collins. Nate usually works undercover, so when his boss puts him in charge of a case involving a serial killer, he’s surprised but pleased he gets to work with Taylor, who is his best friend. But when it becomes clear the killer is hitting close to home and Taylor may be his ultimate target, Nate and his team, including his younger brothers and fellow agents Alex and Court, will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read the two previous stories but I enjoyed this one so much I definitely want to go back and read the stories about Alex and Court.

Readers will feel for Nate. As the oldest brother, he often took the brunt of his father’s abuse when they were children. As a result, he feels like he can’t be in a relationship and that he doesn’t deserve the same happiness his brothers have found. The only person he has ever confided in about his past is Taylor. And as much as he wants to be with her, he feels she deserves better.

Taylor also has a difficult past, one she only confided to Nate about. Yet she wants to be with him and is determined to make him see that he deserves to be happiness, despite what they’ve both been through.

There’s an interesting surprise at the end of the book, which makes me look forward to the next book in the series. I’m interested in seeing how the brothers react and how this surprise fits into their family.

Fans of romantic suspense and of the friends to lovers trope should give this book a chance. It’s well-written with likeable characters mixed with some mystery and suspense.

Book Info:

Publication: February 6, 2018 | Montlake Romance | Aces & Eights #3

Nate Gentry has been a rock for his two younger brothers since the day their mom walked out and left them with their abusive father. Now that they’ve grown up, he’s watched Alex and Court fall in love and settle down. But Nate isn’t made for romance. He keeps his relationships casual. And getting casual with his partner is a fantasy he can’t shake…
Taylor Collins has feelings for Nate, too—and though they run hot, her best friend on the team is strictly off limits. Until a spark in his eyes says, Go for it. But reaching out could prove to be a bad move now that they’re working closer together than ever, and on the most dangerous case of their careers.
An investigation into a brutal series of murders is stirring up bad memories for Taylor, and neither she nor Nate can imagine how close to home it’s going to hit. When it does, Nate will risk everything—including his heart—to keep Taylor safe.

Lol! I haven read the previous books so I’ve been waiting less than you. 🙂 It’s set up well in this book and seems like it’s going to be interesting.
