REVIEW: Baby, Be Mine by Vivian Arend

Baby, Be Mine (Thompson & Sons #2) by Vivian Arend is a solid, fast-paced read. The characters are fiery, well described, and interesting. Once I accepted and moved past a moot point at the beginning of the story, I was able to truly enjoy it. Let me explain further.

babyThere are two main characters in this book, Katy Thompson and Gage Jenick. Clay, Katy’s brother, is also Gage’s best friend. Katy has crushed on Gage for years, while Gage has just become aware that Katy is not just Clay’s little sister anymore, but a smart, beautiful woman with curves. The night before Gage leaves for a temporary job out-of-town, he and Katy finally give in to their lustful feelings. Shortly thereafter, Katy is in a near fatal car accident and as result, suffers from partial amnesia. A month or so later, she realizes she is pregnant.

My pet peeve: I found it extremely unlikely that Katy’s pregnancy was not considered dangerous or high risk after she recently suffered through such a horrific car accident. The trauma itself, in addition to the medications that a typical person would have been given at the time of the accident, zapped the realism of a non-worrisome pregnancy right out of the story for me. I recognize that books are a means of escapism and entertainment, however, completely overlooking the possibility of complications to Katy’s pregnancy due to the accident lessened the legitimacy of the the storyline.

The story continues with Gage returning a couple of months later, learning about Katy’s conditions while trying to win back her heart. Katy still has feelings for Gage, but she does not remember their night together or the promises they made to each other. Overtime, Gage wins Katy’s love by being honest and caring for her deeply. Katy’s former boyfriend has a hard time letting go of the past and as a result, Katy and Gage have to work really hard in order to stay together. The obstacles they overcome are truly unique and out of the ordinary.

I like this series. Katy and Gage’s chemistry is palpable and hot. The first book is about one of the Thompson brothers. Katy’s three other brothers all have distinctive personalities and I would love to read more about them.

What the mind forgets, the heart remembers.

Since the moment Katy Thompson transformed from annoying tagalong to desirable woman, Gage Jenick has awaited his chance. When she kicks her boyfriend to the curb, he doesn’t hold back—in spite of the next day work assignment that will take him away for six long months.

After a head injury sustained on a storm-swept road, Katy can’t remember her own email password, much less how the little pink “positive” on the pregnancy stick got there. Barring an influx of midichlorians, she’s at a loss to explain what happened, or when…or with whom.

Suddenly Gage is back in her life as if he has a right to be there. While she vividly remembers the crush she had on him, she’s no one’s charity case. But another thing she’d forgotten was just how stubborn Gage can be—especially when her domineering ex tries to stake a claim…

Warning. An unforgettable night that gets forgotten. A crazy redneck ex, and a hero who’s ready to take on the world, and his past, for his heroine.
