Back to McGuffey’s by Liz Flaherty: Kate Rafael is thirty seven and hasn’t really ever experienced “real” passion. Not just in BTMterms of relationships, but in terms of life.

One day everything changed though and she realized just what an existence she had been living. She had no relationship, no job and her house burnt down… now what?

Ben McGuffey was a doctor and a good one at that. The problem, he never really wanted to be. He wasn’t any good at marriage either, at least that’s what his annulment showed. Was he really good at anything? Or was it all just in his head?

Here’s the thing when life throws curves at you it becomes about how you handle them. Kate and Ben both have some serious curveballs to deal with this summer. Will they learn to ride the curve and go where it takes them or will they bend that curve to where they need to be?

In Ms. Flaherty’s story the reader is treated to a good bit of blarney, a bit of romance and a lot of life. This is a story that is very real in more ways than one and let’s you into the lives of two middle-aged people who once thought they were very much in love and now are older and wiser.

Back to McGuffey’s is a slow moving story and while filled with fantastic characters but it makes for more of a women’s fiction book than a romance.

The one that got away

Could Kate Rafael’s day get any worse? First she lost her job, then her house burned down and now her ex is back in town. Apparently, Ben McGuffey’s taking a break from being a big-city doctor to help at his family’s tavern and reassess the choices he’s made for his career.

Ben ends up giving Kate a hand…then giving her kisses…and finally, a second chance. But when a local teenager shows them both a glimpse of what it means to be a family, Ben wonders if having kids in small-town Vermont would clash with his ambitions. Or can he truly come home again…to Kate?
