Days-Made-of-GlassDays Made of Glass by Laura Drake easily captured my attention with it’s well-written dialogue, heartbreaking storyline, and strong characters. Having a female bullfighter was just icing on the cake for me.

When a fire takes away their guardian, Harlie takes her sister, Angel, and leaves town to escape social services. Harlie is tough! She’s had to be though. She practically raised her sister, Angel, while having to grow up far too quickly. Life wasn’t easy but she did the best she could with the cards that were dealt. When Harlie finds out Angel needs to be put into a long-term facility to deal with her issues, Harlie is left alone.

“Who was she if she wasn’t being Angel’s big sister?”

Harlie picks up odd jobs just to get enough money to pay for Angel’s care until a man offers her a job with the PBR. She has to get through bullfighter school first, which is no easy feat, especially when you are the only woman there and the other potential bullfighters don’t think you belong.

Harlie’s problem is that she doesn’t let anyone in. She keeps to herself and doesn’t give anyone the chance to get close to her. She does this so she doesn’t get hurt, but being alone can hurt just as much. Even though Harlie is strong, she is not indestructible. No one is!

“You’re glass. You’re gonna shatter.”

One of the bullfighters at the school proves himself to be a good friend to her and eventually breaks down her walls little by little. It takes a while, but Harlie eventually finds herself and finds where she belongs.

“A family can be more than the one you were born into, Harlie. Shared blood may define a family, but spilled blood can too.”

This book is not something I would normally pick up. I am a diehard romance fan yet found Days Made of Glass to be an emotionally moving story that needed to be told. For readers that love women’s fiction or for those who want to read a powerful yet expressive story about family and trust, definitely need to read Days Made of Glass.

Harlie Cooper raised her sister, Angel, even before their mother died. When their guardian is killed in a fire, rather than be separated by Social Services, they run. Life in off the grid in L.A. isn’t easy, but worse, there’s something wrong with Angel.

Harlie walks in to find their apartment scattered with shattered and glass and Angel, a bloody rag doll in a corner. The doctor orders institutionalization in a state facility. Harlie’s not leaving her sister in that human warehouse. But something better takes money. Lots of it.

When a rep from the Pro Bull Riding Circuit suggests she train as a bullfighter, rescuing downed cowboys from their rampaging charges, she can’t let the fact that she’d be the first woman to attempt this stop her. Angel is depending on her.

It’s not just the danger and taking on a man’s career that challenges Harlie. She must learn to trust—her partner and herself, and learn to let go of what’s not hers to save.

A story of family and friendship, trust and truth.

Laura Drake did an incredible job of merging story lines in Days Made of Glass. I found this to be a cohesive, well written book drawing us into Angel’s world of mental illness and being captivated by the life Harlie Cooper found in bullfighting. By the end of the story I learned that in a world that can be difficult and cruel, we can find trust and friendship if we are willing to let our guard down and open our hearts.
