Falling Darkness : Karen Harper has done it again, writing a suspense story that keeps the reader up till all hours. Falling Darkness is page after page of sheer suspense that keeps the reader on pins and nails! It picks up right where Drowning Tides ended, with Claire, new husband Nick, daughter Lexi and ex husband Jace treading water in rafts along with friends/colleagues who are escaping with them to witness protection placement.

Following their near fatal plane crash into the water by Cuba, they are rescued and brought under cover of darkness into Cuba, where a family helps them to reach Havana where they can hopefully seek help to safely reach Michigan, their assigned safe house location. Yet, in Havana, they are located once again by the sinister Clayton Ames, setting off a chain of events that again has them running for their lives, trying to stay a step ahead at all times. From Havana to Guantanamo Bay, to Michigan, Claire, Nick, and their entourage are constantly looking over their shoulders, even once they have reached their safe house. Throughout, they try to find ways to help 5 year old Lexi cope with this run for their lives, which is frightening for adults let alone a 5 year old girl. These events force Nick and Jace to work as partners, though Jace still hopes to win the affections of Claire once more.

As they start to settle in on picturesque Mackinac Island, and begin a semblance of feeling safe, a tragic event happens, taking their witness protection handler from them. Now Claire, Nick, Jace, and their friends, must determine who on the island wanted to harm Julia, and they must determine if Mr. Ames has located their safe house before time runs out.

I cannot recommend this novel or this series highly enough. I invite my fellow readers to begin the South Shores series, as Karen Harper truly knows how to weave a masterful suspense. Plan to stay up all night reading!
