REVIEW: Shift by Sidney Bristol

In Shift (Hot Rides #2) by Sidney Bristol, Tori Chazov should know by now that luck doesn’t last. So when she learns that she and her sister may be in danger again, her first instinct is to pack a bag and run. However, this time it isn’t so easy to leave those she cares about behind, especially Emery Martin. The gorgeous man has come to mean so much to her in such little time. Can she trust him with her secrets?

”And here I thought all you did was spy on my front door.” Tori flipped the lid up, one side of her mouth hiked up in a smile. “Didn’t like group activities?”
“We should scout the area. Figure out where the best cover is. If someone comes for us, I’d like for you to have a sniper’s perch somewhere while I distract them.”

Having absolutely loved the first book of this series, I was really looking forward to reading more about the men and women of Hot Rides – a covert group working out of a garage for the FBI. Right from the beginning, this story was captivating, fast-paced and throughout provided plenty of excitement due to the suspense. Tori and her sister are in serious danger and I wanted to know why a bunch of hit-men had been sent after them.

The dialogue was intense due to the main characters back stories, which made me feel sorry for everything that Emery and Tori have been through in their pasts. Emery’s family never treated him like he was part of the family while Tori and her twin sister have been keeping a major secret about a member of her family. It’s made their lives seem very lonely, and they’re lucky to have found the group that they have with the Hot Rides. However, in saying that, Emery and Tori don’t know who they can trust and I couldn’t blame them with the danger they faced that left me on the edge-of-my-seat wondering if they’ll get out of it.

I was absolutely charmed by Emery. In the beginning, he appears like the strong, silent type; only coming up from his computers and research when absolutely needed, yet he really proves himself capable of almost anything. But what I liked most was how protective he was of Tori and that he would do anything to make sure she was safe, no matter how dangerous the situation was to him. Honestly, he really surprised me with what he did for her against the Russian hit-men because I didn’t know he could be so deadly himself.

”What are we going to do?”
“I can’t think when you’re touching me.”
“Really?” The walking brain had a weakness.
“I’m thinking a lot about things that won’t help us.” He stared down at her, gaze narrowed.
“Like? Dirty, sweaty things?”

While Tori, she was an incredible heroine. All she’s ever known is to run when it comes to the people coming after her and her sister who want to know about their family. Yet, with Emery willing to stand by her side, she finally realizes that running isn’t the answer anymore. Tori is strong, brave and I liked that she’s just as protective of Emery as he is of her. That she’s willing to put her own life on the line, if it’ll keep him safe. Also, I liked how she challenged Emery, especially when she wanted him to spar with her.

Overall, this was a fantastic second book for the Hot Rides series by Ms. Bristol where the sex scenes were red-hot and proved how good Emery is for Tori and vice versa. Besides, Emery needed a little adventure and Tori certainly made his life exciting when it came to sex. The way this story ended will definitely make things interesting for this series, as the Hot Rides team will need to regroup after everything that happened throughout this story including the fact that Emery and Tori have a secret they need to keep from the rest of the team. I would recommend Shift by Sidney Bristol, if you enjoy romantic suspense or the sexy protector trope.
