REVIEW: Taking the Lead by Cecilia Tan

Taking-the-LeadIn Taking the Lead by Cecilia Tan, Ricki and her sister, Gwen, have inherited a secret BDSM club run in the basement of her grandfather’s mansion. Gwen embraces the club, while Ricki is content working behind the scenes. She meets rock star Axel through a mutual friend. Axel is a dominate, and he wants to be the one to prove to Ricki that she’s a submissive.

I didn’t care much for Ricki. One minute she decides she likes being submissive, then she decides it’s something she shouldn’t like so she runs away from Axel. She keeps going back to him only to push him away. The back and forth was tiring.

Axel was very patient with Ricki, knowing that she was fighting her desires. My only issue is that he’s touted as being a Dom but he didn’t come across as being one. He ordered her around in the bedroom, yes, but having read other BDSM books, he doesn’t really come across as being a dominate, just bossy.

There are several story lines going on in this book: Ricki and Axel’s romance, the BDSM Club, and Ricki’s job at Blue Star. There was a lot going on, and some of it, mostly her job, could have been left out. The job storyline felt out of place and seemed like it was thrown in there to create even more drama, which wasn’t necessary.

If you enjoy books about BDSM you may enjoy this one, although it was light on the BDSM.

Thanks, Stacey – when I saw the Spotlight & Giveaway blurb for this book, it really intrigued me. Your review has me second guessing, because back and forth, without real, legitimate reasons or circumstances, exasperates me. It sounds like something that would make me dislike the book.

You’re welcome. I thought it would have been much better if there wasn’t so much of the back and forth that occurred. I found myself getting frustrated with Ricki several times.
