The Amish Witness by Diane Burke lives up to the suspense genre it is part of right from the very beginning! Readers are introduced to Elizabeth, who has returned home to her family’s Amish farm after taking a prolonged Rumspringa with her closest friend, Hannah. When Hannah is murdered, and Elizabeth witnesses the murderer, Elizabeth flees back to her Lancaster county community for safety and shelter, hoping that the murderer will not be able to find her.

Unfortunately, she is attacked within the first 24 hours after her return, leading her to believe her attacker followed her from the city. Her rescuer is none other than her former boyfriend, who was suddenly left behind years before when Elizabeth “jumped the fence”. Her attacker believes Elizabeth has information that incriminates him and will stop at nothing to silence Elizabeth.

While Elizabeth, her mother, Thomas, and the bishop do everything possible to hide her from this criminal, Elizabeth and Thomas try to cope with long ago feelings for each other. Thomas has held lots of anger in his heart for her leaving. He is also now a widower with two young children. Elizabeth wishes to avoid Thomas and his children being targeted by her friends’ killer. As clues start coming together, Elizabeth and her loved ones realize that the killers true identity means he will stop at nothing to silence her because he has so much to lose- having a powerful position in the public eye.

The Amish Witness is definitely a page turner which I highly recommend.
