In The Lawman’s Secret Son by Lorraine Beatty, Carrie is an event coordinator for a church in a small Southern torn, who is also studying social work online to pursue a social work career. Inspired by her very troubled past, she desires to help children and families. Her neighbor, Seth, has returned to this small town, Dover, where he grew up, to serve as a police officer after “sowing his wild oats”.

Carrie and Seth, next door neighbors, have met, but mostly Carrie keeps to herself when not working on events at the church. When one evening a young boy appears on her porch with a note saying he is Seth’s son, Carrie’s protective instincts are brought out- she is extremely angry with Seth until she becomes convinced by his surprise that he was NOT aware he has a child. Seth convinces Carrie to help him with Jack’s care while he tries to locate Jack’s absentee mother. Carrie must balance her instant affection for Jack and Seth against her instincts for keeping her troubled past private- she is deeply afraid how Seth and others will treat her if they find out her past mistakes.

As the story progresses Carrie starts to feel she is being stalked and fears a family member who once abused her has found her. I highly recommend that lovers of romance stories read this lovely story to find out what happens between Carrie, Seth and Jack.
