Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Lavinia Kent and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, A Very Ruby Christmas!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

a-very-ruby-christmasI am one of the few authors I know who hate this question. I always want to mumble, “Well, it’s a Regency Historical with strong erotic elements. Do you want to know more than that?” And I always think my wonderful editor does a far better job than I ever do at writing the blurb.

I wrote A Very Ruby Christmas to be a gift for my readers. It’s definitely a stand-alone story, but it also ties up all the loose ends that were left in Ravishing Ruby. And it includes two little bonus presents, two scenes from other stories that I was dying to share, but that didn’t quite fit with where the characters were in the Ravishing Ruby.

And, in the words that I wish were mine: Madame Rouge—Ruby to her intimates—always makes the secret desires of her clients a priority. Now the time has come to fulfill her own fantasy, one so private it brings a rare blush to her cheeks. When Captain Derek Price returns from his service at sea, Ruby will sell London’s elite house of pleasure, leaving her home behind to marry the sailor who has mastered every surging crest of her body.

Pity, then, the ill-timed arrival of Ruby’s estranged half-sister, Jasmine, desperate for a warm bed and a sympathetic ear. Ruby is loath to marry the poor girl off to a stranger or, even worse, entrust her to the ignoble lord who has bid on the brothel. She has no other choice than to shelter Jasmine herself. As much as Ruby’s heart races at the thought of a future with Derek, she now faces the possibility that, once again, her happy ending has been delayed—unless a Christmas miracle makes all their dreams come true.

Please share the opening lines of this book:

“When is Captain Price returning? I can’t imagine being left alone for so long. However do you manage without him?”
Ruby stared back, taking a moment too long to answer, allowing an awkward silence to grow.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • I LOVE HOLIDAY STORIES, but this is the first one I’ve ever written.
My agent gave me the clue that tied it all together – I’ll just say, “magical mistletoe.”
  • I am trying to figure out if there’s a way I can write another Ruby story.
  • I don’t think there is – but just wait until you meet Ruby’s sister. Hint. Hint.

If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would you use for the audition of the main characters and why?

Another question I have a problem with. My favorite scenes would make the movie XXX, and that’s not my goal.

I have always loved the scenes of Ruby preparing herself to go down and face her patrons, turning herself from an angel-faced blonde into an elegant Madame.

Ruby took one last look out the snowy window and then moved to the mirror to check her appearance.
Dark-red wig in place; tonight’s curls were not quite as bright as on some evenings, but that suited her somewhat dismal mood.
Lips, crimson.
Eyes, lined in kohl.
Dress of deep-purple satin, far more fitted than fashion dictated, but it suited her, and she was a woman who had always chosen what suited her.
Ear bobs, still on her dresser.
She picked up the heavy sapphire bobs and held them up to the light. How many more times would she wear them? For years, ever since she had become Madame Rouge, they had represented who she was; every night she put them on and thought about her mother’s life and everything that had led her to this place. But the heavy jewels had no place in either the life of Emma Scanton, granddaughter of a textile merchant, or that of the future Mrs. Derek Price, wife of a Rhode Island sea captain. No, the ear bobs were part of Madame Rouge, not of either of the women Ruby might become. With a deep sigh, she threaded them through her ears, their familiar weight transforming her.
Madame Rouge had arrived.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

I’ve always liked the idea that we are not defined by our past actions, that we can rise above them, change to become whomever we want to be. This is definitely true of Ruby. She makes a positive decision to pursue the life she wants. I think it’s a lesson we all need constantly to remember.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned for 2016?

I am currently finishing the first book that will feature Ruby’s sister as Madame Blanche, Tangled in Sin. I am also working on a contemporary that I hope to finish writing this fall.

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

A Very Ruby Christmas is intended for mature audiences.

Meet the Author:

Lavinia KentLavinia Kent never knew that most people don’t make up stories in their heads to pass the time. She still has a hard time understanding how those who don’t survive the doctor’s waiting room or a grocery store line without another world to escape into.

As the mother of three, Lavinia finds “leisure time” to be ever-elusive, but when she is not reading romance novels, she watches far too much HBO and reality television. It must also be noted that she has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Buffy and the new Doctor Who.

I love them because they get me in the mood for the holiday, and some of them seem to have a special magic that makes them better than others!
