She’s helped save the life of many a soldier, but when she learns her betrothed has been killed, her own heart may be broken beyond repair. Summoning all her strength, Evelyn is determined to carry on-not just for herself and her country, but for her unborn child. Corporal Joel Campbell dreams of the day the war is over and he can return home and start a family. When a brutal battle injury puts that hope in jeopardy, Joel is lost to despair . . . until he meets Evelyn. Beautiful, compassionate, and in need of help, she makes an unconventional proposal that could save their lives-or ruin them irrevocably. Now, amidst the terror and turmoil of the Western Front, these two lost souls will have to put their faith in love to find the miracle they’ve been looking for.

Top 5 Research Facts about HOPE RISING

1. While most people think of the Red Cross when it comes to nurses serving in WWI, there were more than 10,000 nurses like Evelyn Gray in HOPE RISING who served overseas with the Army Nurse Corps.

2. Army Nurse Corps nurses who married or became pregnant were honorably discharged. It wasn’t until 1942 that ANC nurses, who married, were allowed to remain on active duty.

3. The First World War was an interesting mix of new technology and old. Tanks, machine guns, airplanes, and telephones were new to the battlefield; and yet, horses, carrier pigeons, and trench warfare were still in use.

4. To keep infection in wounded soldiers from growing worse, in a pre-antibiotics world, a sodium hypochlorite solution called Dakin’s solution was used during WWI. Jars of solution and perforated rubber tubes were used to irrigate open wounds.

5. Though rules forbade fraternization between nurses and enlisted men, romance still bloomed during the world’s first major conflict.
