I am often asked how I am inspired to write my stories. Is it a picture? A song? A overheard piece of conversation. Yes, to all of the above. I’m always on the lookout for new ideas—something that gets me excited to spend hours at the computer. My Christmas novella, Secret Santa Baby, jumped into head and wouldn’t let go and I had no choice to write it. I looooove those kinds of stories.
I was sitting by the pool way back in June watching my kids play with their friends and chatting with the other neighborhood moms (oh, the glamorous life of a romance author) when I pulled up the Entangled Publishing website and saw a call for submissions. While I baked under the sun and made sure kids wore SPF 50000, the editors were looking for Christmas and New Year’s stories for their novella lines. Okay, I was game.
I have to admit that sitting in a bikini by the pool didn’t inspire me to start thinking about Christmas (although is my fave time of the year and I secretly listen to Christmas music in October) but they wanted stories inspired by the song, “Santa Baby” and I was hooked. You know the one where the chick is asking for her Sugar Daddy Santa to give her everything from a mink to a car? That’s the one.
I think it has been recorded by everyone from Madonna to Michael Buble but my favorite version is by the late, great Eartha Kitt. How can you resist Catwoman (I just gave my age away – if you don’t understand the reference Google the Adam West version of Batman) seductively requesting the equivalent of an Oprah’s Favorite Things show from her lover? Just awesome.
So, I pulled out the iPod and turned on the Christmas playlist and listened to the song a few times to get my juices flowing and suddenly I wondered what the song would be like if the identity of Santa Baby was a secret and he/she used all those amazing presents to win the heart of the one they adore? And, then the old noggin started churning . . .
What if the hero and heroine were long time friends…
And, the office held a Secret Santa gift exchange every year?
Set in the office of a game design company, Secret Santa Baby is the sexy, fun and thoroughly modern story of a man who normally follows all the rules but decided to break them all to win the woman he’s wanted for years. He uses the Secret Santa game and the gifts in the song to finally make the play and the result is a perfect read for an afternoon spent by the fire with a hot chocolate.
