Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Lavinia Kent to HJ!
Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Lavinia and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Tangled in Sin!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

I hate writing summaries. I would truly rather write a whole book than a synopsis, so here is my Amazon blurb:

Lady Cynthia Westhope can’t believe the shocking rumor is true. Her childhood friend, the daughter of a duke no less, has become the madam of London’s most exclusive and notorious brothel. Though she’s known as “Sin,” Cynthia is scandalized—and surprisingly curious. Just picturing the whips, the chains, the uncontrollable urges men gratify behind closed doors sends a jolt of electricity through her body. Still, Sin can’t imagine taking part in such games—until she’s snatched off the street during a raging storm and swept away to a remote cottage.

When James Winters encounters the comely virgin, he assumes she’s one of Madame Blanche’s fresh new beauties, especially after Sin pulses in ecstasy as he ravishes her. Then he discovers that she’s Lord Westhope’s virgin daughter . . . or was. Now they will both be compromised, unless James devises a plan to save Sin from disgrace. Before long, they’re entangled in a web of tempting propositions, family secrets, and sensual intrigue—and bound together so tightly that James never wants to let go.

Please share the opening lines of this book:

Madame Blanche stopped and turned to stare into the mirror just before descending the long, curved staircase to the public rooms. The day was still early, but nerves drove her from her chamber. It was her first day running the house and her belly was a bucket full of minnows, swirling and dashing.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • The heroine in my book, Lady Cynthia Westhope was modeled after a young Isabelle Adjani. I actually met Adjani once when I was working at the National Museum of Women in the Arts and we were hosting a show on Camille Claudel. She was by far the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen.
  • My hero, Lord James Winters, was based on Scott Foley, Jake on Scandal, — and I don’t think I need to say more.
  • This is the first book of this series without Ruby, Madame Rouge, in it and even though she was thousands of miles away in Rhode Island, she kept trying to fight her way into every scene. She very clearly thought that she knew how things should be progressing far better than anyone else.

Please tell us a little about the characters in your book. As you wrote your protagonist was there anything about them that surprised you?

Lord James and Lady Cynthia knew each other as children, but hadn’t seen each other in years. I love writing books where the hero and heroine have a past that influences the way they relate today.

I was quite surprised at how quickly they got under each other’s skin. I wanted them to have chemistry, but I wasn’t expecting how prickly they’d be with each other, how slow to trust – but then how comfortable they could be just sitting quietly.

If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would you use for the audition of the main characters and why?

I think I’d choose the scene where they first come face to face. Cynthia recognizes James – she had spied on him once recently, but James has no idea who Cynthia is. I’d love to see that acted out, to see Cynthia’s reaction to the boy she once knew who is now a man, and to see James react only to how she looks without recognizing her.

It would be fun to see the different ways this could be played – and of course, I’d be looking for that magic chemistry that can make or break a movie.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

I want my readers to escape for a few hours from reality, to have a break from day to day life, to give their brains chance to refresh. I’ve always felt that was the main purpose of romance, the chance to escape to brighter place where you know the ending will be happy.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned for 2017?

I am currently working on a Scottish Highlander Novella (something I’ve never done before) and the next book in the Bound and Determined series.

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Excerpt from Tangled in Sin:

“Jazzy! Jasmine! Open this door. Open it now!”
The pound and bellow shook the cottage, awaking Cynthia from her uneasy sleep. She rolled over, the blanket tangling about her. The floor was hard and cold. She pulled the blanket tighter, blinking at the coals of the fire.
She needed to put on another log. She’d meant to add one before she fell asleep.
Why hadn’t the maid taken care of it?
And why was she sleeping on the floor?
Sitting up abruptly she blinked, trying to make sense of everything as all the pieces of the previous evening slowly came together.
More pounding on the door, heavy masculine pounding.
Oh God, how had she fallen asleep?
Why had she not left earlier, braved the storm?
She drew her knees up and wrapped her arms about them, staring at the door. It wasn’t strong enough to hold for long and already she could see the chair beginning to slide and give. Would he be less mad if she let him in? Less likely to hurt her?
“Jasmine. Open. This. Door.”
Jasmine?
For the first time the name penetrated. Why was he calling her Jasmine? And who was he? There was something disturbingly familiar about the voice, something that throbbed deep in her belly.
“Jasmine, if I freeze to death out here, Mother will never forgive you.”
Jasmine. Mother. Her mind moved slowly, fitting together the pieces. One of Jasmine’s brothers? Could it be? Pushing to her feet, but keeping the blanket wrapped tight about her, Cynthia rose and slowly edged toward the door, trying to recognize the voice, needing to be sure.
“Jazzy, I swear . . .”
Jazzy. Only James called Jasmine Jazzy. But why would he be here? That could not be possible, could it? Had he found her, come to rescue her?
But that was his voice. As her mind cleared, she was certain. No other voice had ever caused her body to vibrate in such a way.
Another pound. “Jazzy!”
“I am coming,” she said loudly enough to be heard, her voice raspy with sleep.
“It’s about time,” James’s voice accused.
“I am sorry, I was asleep.” And perhaps she still was. None of this seemed quite real. Her mind filled with the image of the strong profile staring out Jasmine’s window.
She grabbed the chair and started to pull it out of the way, just as James gave a massive push on the door, causing it to fly open and sending her to her knees.
“So help me, Jazzy. The bridge has almost washed out. I barely made it across on the remaining beams. I am lucky I didn’t fall in and freeze. If I wasn’t worried about you, I’d—”
“You came to rescue me?” Cynthia could not help the quiver in her voice as she began to rise, as she stared up at the huge man who stood before her—the huge, wet, angry man with dark eyes glaring, sharp chin jutting, hands clenched in angry fists.
“Jas—Who the hell are you and what are you doing here?”

Meet the Author:

Lavinia Kent never knew that most people don’t make up stories in their heads to pass the time. She still has a hard time understanding how those who don’t survive the doctor’s waiting room or a grocery store line without another world to escape into.

As the mother of three, Lavinia finds “leisure time” to be ever-elusive, but when she is not reading romance novels, she watches far too much HBO and reality television. It must also be noted that she has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Buffy and the new Doctor Who.
