When my last book came out (Body Shot), I wrote a blog post about tequila. Now in my newest book, Top Shelf, my heroine has a career as a mixologist.
Yes, I like to include a lot of food and drinks in my stories, which is something I do enjoy in real life. ☺
A mixologist is more than just a bartender. It’s kind of like the difference between a cook and a chef. The mixologist uses culinary and bartending skills to create cocktails that are unique and different. Sidney started off as a bar back when she gave up a high powered career in investment banking, when she was trying to get past personal tragedy and start her life over. She discovered a passion for cocktails, for mixing them and creating new ones.
This article explains the difference between a mixologist and a bartender, and I like the point that “You can be a bartender without being a mixologist, but you can’t be a mixologist without being a bartender.” Sidney worked her way up in the business. Bartending is typically a male-dominated profession, but there are many women making a name for themselves as professional bartenders.
There are actually mixology competitions, and winning these competitions can build a reputation as a mixologist and open doors to career and consulting opportunities, as what happened to Sidney. When she found her creativity stifled by a career with a big hotel chain, she struck out on her own to offer consulting services to hotels, restaurants and distillers.
