In Wish by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff, Ginnie Angelico has seen better days. Not that she’s complaining. But learning that her now ex-boyfriend was cheating on her all while using her life’s savings to fund his real estate business was not a happy time. Thank goodness Ginnie isn’t afraid of hard work. Because that’s what it will take to cover her (huge) mortgage while she gets her art business established. It’s when she’s on the hunt for more colored glass for a mosaic that Ginnie comes across a beautiful bottle to add to her collection. Too bad she didn’t know how it was going to change her life when she bought it.

‘One thing’s become abundantly clear: he’s the real deal and I’m getting way too caught up in all this. In him.’

The antique-looking bottle turns out to have a message inside about being granted a wish. Not someone who believes in genies or anything paranormal, Ginnie laughs it off. But when a gorgeous man, supposedly named Mr. Wish, shows up at her door to grant her one wish? She’s sure someone is messing with her. Although after a couple more encounters with her ginger-haired hunk of a genie, Ginnie starts to wonder if she’s really being given an extraordinary opportunity here. Which begs the question: What should she wish for? And could Mr. Wish be part of the deal?

“You’re giving out a wish to someone else?” I feign insult and press my hand over my heart. “I didn’t know genies were such wish sluts.”
He flashes the sweetest crooked smile. “I just can’t help myself. Sometimes I run off, wishing with perfect strangers. Two or three at a time.”

Holy plot twist! Wish was a brand new and somewhat different–but terrific–story from one of my go-to authors, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. With hints of the paranormal and a blend of contemporary romance with romantic comedy, I adored everything about this crazy-good tale.

‘A wish isn’t a hope. It’s a plea to the universe to make your deepest desires come true.’

The one constant I’ve found with MJP’s writing is that you never know what will happen but you *do* know all the twists and turns will be so worth it in the end. That describes Wish perfectly. I went into it thinking there would be a paranormal or woo woo vibe to it because, well, it’s a genie story. And while there was a bit of the preternatural, Ginnie’s journey was more of a contemporary romance with lots of MJP’s awesome humor thrown in throughout. Which I think worked perfectly for this complicated storyline.

Okay, so like with most of MJP’s books, I can’t say too much without giving away spoilers. What I can say is that Ginnie was a kickass heroine who was definitely down on her luck after her cheating ex-boyfriend took her for all her money and did damage to her self-esteem. I loved Ginnie’s moral compass and that she was determined to work hard and make it on her own. She did take emotional comfort from her BFF Olivia who was awesome in her own right. It was the introduction of Mr. Wish to Ginnie’s life that completely threw things sideways…again.

I really, really can’t say much about Mr. Wish aside from holy cow. What a big old (sexy) mess that man was. I had no clue what was going on for about half the book when it came to his role as “genie”, granting wishes. But when the truth started getting revealed a little bit at a time, even then I questioned things. And rightly so. I think Mr. Wish’s backstory and the reason he was making wishes come true will floor readers and give them something to think about long after they’ve read the last page.

Talk about a hard-won HEA. With Wish, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff wrote a complex, heartfelt, delightfully funny and romantic novel that will take readers on an unforgettable journey. Highly recommended.
