In A Little Too Much (A Little Too Far #2) by Lisa Desrochers, Hilary McIntyre has done her best to bury her past and become a strong woman with a tightly guarded heart. Her time in a group home in her teens was one of the lowest points of her life. Feeling good about where her life is now, Hilary chases her dream to star on Broadway. Then Alessandro Moretti walks back into her life. He was the one person who could actually make her feel safe when they were in the group home–right up until he left her there on her own. Now Alessandro wants to make amends for what happened. Hilary isn’t sure she can handle dredging up the past or watching him walk away again.
‘But now Alessandro’s here, and I feel the dead parts of me coming back to life. Being with him again might gain me back my soul, but at what cost?’
Alessandro Moretti is back in New York City, attempting to get closure for his troubled teenage years. Seeking out Hilary is probably a mistake, but he has to make sure she is doing well and see if he can explain what happened eight years ago. Alessandro is still drawn to Hilary and feels just as protective now as he did back then. Every time he is near her, he feels the guilt over what he and his brother put her through, but mostly Alessandro wants her back in his life again. If only he can gain her trust and prove his intentions are for good this time.
“If this lasts forever, it will still be over too soon.”
A Little Too Much is book two in the New Adult series: A Little Too Far by Lisa Desrochers. Told from Hilary’s perspective, this gives us a look into Alessandro’s teenage years he eluded to in book one, A Little Too Far, in which Hilary played an important role. It also shows us where he is now in his life since leaving Rome.
If you haven’t read book one yet, you can still read A Little Too Much as a standalone. Lisa did a great job explaining why Alessandro is in New York now and (eventually) we find out how his path has lead him to find Hilary again. I was once again impressed with the way our protagonist’s emotions were so wonderfully described. It was easy for me to relate to how they felt in the situations presented and to connect with them.
Hilary and Alessandro’s story is quite different from Lexi and Trent’s in book one. There is still a thread of the forbidden with this plot, but it’s from their past, not in the present time. Their relationship is very complicated, filled with dark secrets, and I felt it got even more intense when they began to reveal the truth about what happened after they were torn apart as teens. There was a longing on Hilary’s part to feel as safe with Alessandro as she did at age fourteen, but she’s been hurt so much that she has a hard time letting him in again. Alessandro is still fighting his demons in this story and with Hilary’s help, he begins to separate himself from some of the guilt he’s felt for years.
I think A Little Too Much is a good example of a New Adult story with the perfect amount of emotion and passion without being angsty. It had a plot twist that I didn’t expect, and I was invested in the characters all the way through to the end. I’d definitely recommend checking this one out.

In the follow-up to Lisa Desrochers’ explosive New Adult novel A Little too Far, Alessandro Moretti must face the life he escaped and the girl he loved and left behind.
Twenty-two year old Hilary McIntyre would like nothing more than to forget her past. As a teenager abandoned to the system, she faced some pretty dark times. But now that’s all behind her. Hilary has her life on track, and there’s no way she’ll head back down that road again.
Until Alessandro Moretti—the one person who can make her remember—shows up on her doorstep. He’s even more devastatingly gorgeous than before, and he’s much too close for comfort. Worse, he sees right through the walls she’s built over these last eight years, right into her heart and the secrets she’s guarding.
As Hilary finds herself falling back into love with the man who, as a boy both saved and destroyed her, she must decide. Past or future? Truth or lies?
