A Ring for His Pregnant Midwife by Amy Ruttan: Marcus is still recovering from donating a kidney. He is still not gotten from the betrayal of his ex-girlfriend either. Thanks to her he has developed a player sort of reputation. He figures if he just sticks with short term flings with tourists and similar women on the tropical island where he lives on his boat, he can protect himself. Once he is cleared by his doctor he can get back to his own medical practice.
His recovery is interrupted when a friend asks him to enter into a marriage of convenience to his wife’s midwife. Chase’s wife Pepper is dealing with a difficult pregnancy due to her sickle cell anemia. They only trust midwife Alexis to get Pepper through this time. The trouble is Alexis’ green card is due to expire. She can’t go back to her native England to do that since she is also pregnant would be delayed quite a while waiting for the paperwork. It seems the only way is to encourage Marcus to agree to this plan.
Marcus is very unsure about this and will have to set up a web of lies so immigration will believe he and Alexis have a true marriage.
I liked both characters immensely. Marcus may have come off as a playboy, but underneath it all he is a good, caring man who risked his life so another person could live. It’s understandable how he feels he needs to protect his heart. If you have been “burned”, you shy away from letting that happen again. At the same time, he is willing to help out friends dealing with difficult circumstances.
Alexis has suffered her own betrayal and run away to try to make a new life for herself and her child. She is wary of relationships, but is very loyal to her patients and goes way beyond the usual care.
I liked how the author showed that a pregnant women can still be sexy and alluring. It seems that includes personality and well as looks.
The research shown about sickle cell anemia was authentic. Years ago I worked in hospital labs and saw the disease wrecked havoc on people. Since I have been reading and reviewing Harlequin Medical Romances, I appreciate how authors mix in information that help readers learn new things with just the right amount of sizzling romance.
A Ring For His Pregnant Midwife is the second book in the Caribbean Island Hospital series. The first one was good, but this novel impressed me even more as it concentrated on Marcus more than his twin Matthew. The reader will really want to read the two tales in order to get the full background and flavor of the story. You will love being able to travel to an island paradise without leaving home.
