Dr. Finlay’s Courageous Bride by Marion Lennox: Rab has taken a leave from his surgical practice in Sydney to deal with family business. His grandfather, who he didn’t really know, has left him very valuable property in Cockatoo Valley. He has come to tell the residents that he can’t take over and save them from a mining company that wants to come in and basically destroy most of the town. At first, he doesn’t tell them the whole reason why he can’t claim the land. Then a younger man tells everyone that the main stipulation for Rab to take over everything is to be married. The problem is the date for Rab getting married is only six weeks away when the long time covenant expires. Rab doesn’t even have a girlfriend.
Just when Rab thinks he’ll have to truly cause many townspeople to lose everything, he gets a proposition from Mia who is a nurse at the small clinic in town. She will agree to marry him for the one year stipulation in the inheritance. At first Rab is hesitant, but finally decides this will work.
Rab doesn’t know at first that he had helped Mia in years past. Mia was in the burn unit in the Sydney hospital where Rab worked. Rab read to Mia and her roommate almost every night. Both women were severely burned and couldn’t see him, but loved his soothing voice.
I absolutely loved both characters in this book. Mia had been through so much to get better. She still was able to go back to school and become a nurse thanks to the people in her town. She has to deal with awful scars, but is focused on helping those who helped her. Rab has a tender heart despite not having a good childhood. It is amazing that he can look past Mia’s scars and see the beauty within.
Besides growing romance, there is plenty of heart pounding action as Rab and Mia deal with medical emergencies and trouble from the past. As with previous Harlequin Medical Romances I read in the recent past, the author has done her research and made details authentic.
This novel was extremely heartwarming for me. The ability for people to have unconditional love, gives me hope in an often stressful world.
