His Ward by Lena Matthews is an interesting novella. It is the love story between successful businessman Misha Turkovic and his former ward, Tionne Singleton.
Misha was taken in by Tionne’s father after his parents were killed during a tragic incident in Bosnia that involved the military. Misha was already a teenager when his life changed so drastically. Not only did he have a new country to call home, he now lived with a four year old girl and her parents. Years later, when Tionne’s parents died in a car accident, Misha became her legal guardian. Misha worships the ground Tionne walks upon and he continues to make sure that her every need is met, even though she is far passed the age of which a legal guardian is required.
Misha and Tionne eventually acknowledge their feelings for each other and get their happily ever after. However, it took the author almost the entire book for them to reach that point. The story started off with a bang, but the cat and mouse game slowly lost its luster.
I thought Ms. Matthews did a good job of presenting Misha and Tionne’s individual feelings for each other, and as a result, I felt their passion from the very first chapter. I liked Nicholi, Misha’s cousin, business partner and friend. His uncanny ability to rib Misha, while being incredibly endearing and observant, kept a smile on my face throughout the story.
Overall, I liked this novella and I plan to read more from this author.

Thanks to the generosity of her guardian, Misha Turkovic, Tionne Singleton has lived a life that others only dream of. Everything good in her world, he’s provided. She lives in a condo he owns, drives a car he bought, and wears clothes purchased with funds he deposits monthly into her checking account. Misha’s done everything in his power to insure she wants for nothing, yet the thing she longs for most is the one thing he’ll never give. Himself.
From the moment she became his ward Misha made it his life mission to protect and cherish Tionne; he has no intention of stopping now just because she’s no longer a teen. Taking care of her is his pleasure, loving her his secret shame. Misha knows keeping things strictly platonic is best for all concerned, but knowing the right thing to do and doing it are two different things. Especially since Tionne seems hellbent on showing him she’s not a little girl anymore.
