It Started With A Royal Kiss by Jennifer Faye: Indigo is doing caricatures at Ludus Resort to earn extra money during the vacation season. She hopes to have a gallery showing her more serious art soon. Her mother needs assisted living and she is trying hard to make that possible.

She is quite surprised when the Crown Prince Istvan from Rydiania shows up at the chair to have his caricature done. He seems quite charming, but she doesn’t want any part of his royal family. They pushed out Istvan’s uncle the former king, Georgios, and all his staff. Indigo’s late father was part of that staff and she has never forgotten the harm and tragedy that whole era caused her family. Indigo and her mother moved to Greece and have struggled.

Indigo doesn’t want to say yes when Istvan asks her to come to Rydiania to paint his royal portrait even though his parents have already picked out another artist. She finally gives in when the fee Istvan quotes her will more than pay for the help her mother needs. It will only be for a short time and she can get back to her art career. It’s all supposed to be just a job until an unexpected kiss seems to change everything.

Indigo is a woman the reader can admire. She has sacrificed a great deal for her beloved mother. Love has never had a true place in her heart. Istvan is much different from his family who come off as more than a little stuffy and snobby. Istvan has become the Crown Prince by the old-fashioned rules of succession. That’s not what he wants is very clear. The author shows how he is much more in touch with the local people than his family. He is kind to them all and it shows how he enjoys being kind to Indigo, even before he know her whole back story.

Although It Started With a Royal Kiss is the second in a trilogy, you will have no trouble following the story. I look forward to book #3.
