Marriage Reunion in the ER by Emily Forbes: Lily has been working as an ER nurse in a large
hospital in Australia. She is near her siblings, but she left her surgeon husband, Otis, behind in London two years ago. She had lost their baby under traumatic circumstances and felt Otis didn’t give her the support she needed.
Otis has finally finished all he needs to be a trauma surgeon. He accepts a job at the same hospital where Lily works. He hopes to talk with her privately once he’s settled, but a huge trauma brings them face to face without warning.
Lily is upset that he didn’t tell her he was coming ahead of his job and invitation to one of her sister’s wedding. Otis feels that he can win Lily back and they can continue their marriage. Lily is very hesitant about everything, but finally agrees to a three month trial period.
The reader can see where both characters are coming from. Lily was the oldest in a family and did most of the raising of her siblings. Her parents were part of a commune and not very good at raising their children. Lily wants someone she can depend on and wants to have a baby before her biological clock starts ticking too loudly.
Otis loves Lily, but wants to follow a schedule that will let him establish his career, so he can be there for a child. He is not always good at communicating how he is feeling.
This is the fourth in a series, so the other siblings certainly play a part in this story. Some background information is shared, so the reader won’t feel lost. I hadn’t read any of the previous novels of this story and was engaged by this book.
Of course, there is a lot of focus on family dynamics and how it affects different characters. I loved that there was lots of hope and redemption. That is one of the most important factors for me.
The romance takes a while to rev up, but when it does it seems as if steam was coming right off the pages.
My only critique was there was a little too much fussing about the same issues. I would have liked less of that and more background on the area of Australia where this tale was set.
I recommend this novel as one that will heat up your day and warm your heart at the same time.
