Single Mom’s Mistletoe Kiss by Rachel Dove: Marnie has settled in the Cornwall town of Carey Cove as a midwife. Her heart was broken by a man she thought she was going to marry. Now she is surrounded by the love of the community of midwives. She is currently out on her own maternity leave after having a baby who is a miracle of sorts. Marnie thought she would never be a mother after dealing with a medical condition. Violet is a beautiful baby. Marnie is besotted with her and looks forward to raising her on her own.
While Marnie is out on maternity leave, the clinic has hired a temporary midwife. Instead of a female replacement, the clinic has a very good looking man.
Ash has been traveling from place to place as a temporary midwife for quite a while. After losing his wife and newborn son, he feels he has to keep moving. So far, that has had some limited success since he stays too busy to dwell on the past.
After Ash meets Marnie and baby Violet, he finds out they are next door neighbors in their remote location in an almost comical way. He admires Marnie for all her hard work and what a devoted mother she is.
Marnie is a dedicated midwife who has forged her own path despite setbacks. She is attracted to Ash and his kindness, but is afraid to get too attached since he will be leaving in the near future. Ash is afraid to get attached after his heartache in the past and feels it’s best not to stay too long in one place. Can there be a future for the two?
Marnie and Ash’s story is one that is sweet and uplifting. Anyone who has ever watched “Call The Midwife” knows there can be lots of drama and suspense in childbirth. This novel certainly shows that element. I would have given this book a higher grade except for a few details. There were several times that were jarring when the wrong name was used in a scene. I know I’m not a published author, but as a reader who logs 200 books a year, certainly things throw me off. Also, I found it hard to believe Marnie found the time and energy to do so many Christmas tasks with having a newborn.
It is always amazing that several different authors can get to together to craft series that have interconnections. I have developed a fondness for Harlequin Medical Romances and look forward to reading more soon.
