In Their Second-Chance Baby by Tara Taylor Quinn, police Lieutenant Annie Morgan wants a baby, but is at a high risk of having a baby with birth defects due to her age. She decides to use embryos created with her ex-husband, JAG attorney Seth Morgan, but asks him for permission to use them first.
It’s been ten years since Seth pushed Annie away because he didn’t want her in the same profession that had gotten his mother killed when he was child. He thought the embryos were destroyed and is angry and shocked that they weren’t. At one time his dream was to have children with Annie, but that dream had passed. Still, he finds himself concerned about Annie and going through a pregnancy by herself. He also worries that Annie could get killed on the job and there will be no one to care for the child. Slowly, Seth finds himself insinuating himself back into Annie’s life, and while he swears he’s only going to be on the fringe of the baby’s life, he finds himself wanting more. So does Annie. She knows Seth would be a great father, and she finds old feelings rise to the surface. The problem is Seth still has issues about the dangers associated with Annie’s job, and Annie doesn’t trust that Seth won’t run away again and break her heart for a second time.
This is the sixth book in the series but it can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read the previous books but didn’t feel like I was missing anything. The whole book mainly focuses on Seth and Annie with a few side characters tossed in, and I didn’t get the feeling that those characters were in the other books.
Annie never forces Seth to be involved with anything having to do with the baby and, while he wants to be involved, he never forces Annie to let him. He accepts that everything having to do with the pregnancy and the baby is up to Annie and that she has the ultimate say. They both have unresolved issues when it came to their marriage, and I liked how they took the time to air their grievances and try to work through their issues. Their concerns were very realistic, as were the ways they dealt with them. I quickly found myself rooting for them and hoping they’d be able to work things out.
I would have liked to have seen more of a resolution between Annie and her grandmother that she had recently connected with. Did they continue to meet in secret? Would her grandfather find out? Would he want anything to do with her? None of this was answered and I found myself a little disappointed about it. There was really only one scene with the grandmother, along with a couple of other quick references. There’s also mention of telling Seth’s father about the pregnancy, and he said he wanted to do it, but then he never does. I would have liked to have seen what he thought about the whole situation. These didn’t really take away from my overall enjoyment of the story though.
Their Second-Chance Baby is a wonderful heartfelt story about family, love, forgiveness, and second chances. Well-written with realistic situations and characters readers will fall for, I recommend it for those who enjoy second chance romances.
