REVIEW: Truly Madly Magically by Hazel Beck

Truly Madly Magically by Hazel Beck: Ellowyn Good has always taken a lot of flack about only being a half-witch since her father is human. He left her and her mother, remarried and had a new human family. On top of her struggle with not being a full witch, her mother cursed her with never being able to lie.

Ellowyn has known Zander since they were young. They have been attracted to each other for a long time, but decide they can only be “friends with benefits” during the witches’ celebration of Beltane. Unfortunately, the usual magic that keeps Ellowyn and other witches from getting pregnant fails on the most recent Beltane. Ellowyn is trying to hide her pregnancy from most people. She’s not sure if Zander will be a good father. She knows she will have to tell the truth sooner rather than later.

Life has more threatening events on the near horizon. The witches’ coven Joywood has been the ruling one for a very long time. Their name is a misnomer since there’s nothing joyful about them. They seem intent on going after Ellowyn and causing havoc. The Riverwood coven must find a way to gain control and bring peace to the area again.

Although the story is mainly fantasy, the author brings up many issues that plague our society today. Whether magical or real, there is a tendency for some to use lies and violence to maintain the upper hand.

Ellowyn’s and and Zander’s love story is one of getting past the physical and growing in trust and support. The others in the Riverwood coven show how they can stand up against evil even with a high cost.

If you enjoy fantasy or just want to escape from everyday life, Truly Madly Magically will fit the bill. It’s third in a series and stands well on its own.
