Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Amy Ruttan to HJ!
Hi Amy and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Baby Bombshell for the Doctor Prince!
Thank you for having me at Harlequin Junkie!
Please summarize the book a la Twitter style for the readers here:
A spare to the heir. Has a one night stand. His country collapses and he goes into hiding. Assumes a secret identity and is placed in the care of his one night stand, who is pregnant with his child.
Please share the opening lines of this book:
DANG IT!
She was late.
Imogen hated being late. Especially on the first day of the medical conference, in her first lab of the conference. This was a lab she’d specifically signed up for.
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
- The heroine lives on one of the iconic houseboats in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. A lot of those houseboats are actually built by the residents. They were old barges.
- This is my 25th book with Harlequin Medicals and the first one I did with my current editor.
- Both Canadian settings I’ve been too. Toronto is my hometown and Yellowknife I’ve been too and love setting my books there.
- Although the north is light pretty late (the sun sets almost midnight), August is the month the northern lights return to the Northwest Territories. And August is a popular month for tourists.
- Great Slave Lake is the deepest lake in North America and the tenth largest lake in the world.
What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?
They’re both late to the same simulation lab at their conference. She’s friendly to him and they get paired together. They’re both impressed with their work. Both of them are alone at the conference and sort of stick together for companionship, that turns into something more.
Using just 5 words, how would you describe Hero and Heroine’s love affair?
It was supposed to be a one night fling, but it was a pretty intense connection that led to the one night stand. Honestly, my hero wanted more. He didn’t want to leave her, but his country collapsed. His father was dead and his brother (the heir presumptive) was missing and he had to be hidden. He’s thrilled to find her again. He’s shocked she’s pregnant, but he knows he has to step up and protect Imogen and his baby from danger. Imogen was highly attracted to Lev. Usually, having a one night stand wasn’t her thing, but she’d been burned before by love. She didn’t want to leave her job in the north, so she thought a one night stand and taking a risk was exactly what she needed. She doesn’t trust that Lev won’t leave her, but she’s still drawn to him.
The First Kiss…
The first kiss happens when they decide to rent a penthouse hotel room on a whim to have a drink at an old bar that overlooked the water. The bar had been converted to a hotel, but they decided to rent the room so they could see the waterfront in Toronto. They’d actually ducked out of a conference social. They start to dance on their private patio after some champagne and she kissed him
The kiss was light at first and then deepened. His arms went around her back, pulling her close, and suddenly it was no longer a light, butterfly kiss but something deep with longing.
It had been so long since a man had made her feel this way. Since she had felt this need to relinquish her careful control and just feel.
Without revealing too much, what is your favorite scene in the book?
I think my favourite scene is when Lev decides to go for a swim from the boat house to the shore and back.
“What is with you and being naked?” She handed him the towel.
He chuckled, a devilish glint to his eye. “It was refreshing.”
“I should say so.” She chuckled.
He grinned. “It was fine. No one saw me!”
“Oh, no?” Imogen waved to her neighbor, Mrs. Smythe, an elderly woman who was staring from her deck, where she had been enjoying a cup of coffee. She was now staring at Lev, mouth agape. “Good morning, Mrs. Smythe!”
Her neighbor waved, barely, still staring at Lev.
Lev’s eyes were twinkling and he was trying not to laugh. “I didn’t know she was there. I swear.”
If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would be absolutely crucial to include?
I think when Lev see’s the northern lights for the first time. The northern lights are kind of magical and it shows a soft side to him.
“I’ve waited a long time to see this,” he whispered.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
“It is.” Lev continued to stare up at it, but then he turned and looked at her, touching her face. “It is beautiful, but not as beautiful as you.”
Readers should read this book …
It’s a feel good story. I loved writing it. I loved setting it in the north, because I do enjoy writing wilderness medicine. It makes you realize how lucky we are in the city to have everything so close.
What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?
I’m currently working on Book #27 for Harlequin Medicals. I have some other stuff always percolating in my mind.
Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Excerpt from Baby Bombshell for the Doctor Prince:
Imogen smiled. “It’s nice to have someone looking out for you.”
Lev shrugged. “I suppose, but why should he have to? He has no real life of his own. He used to be a pilot in the military and I know he would like to fly again. I suggested he take a job as a bush pilot if we’re up here for the foreseeable future, but he won’t do it. I’m his job, but I know he’s bored.”
“Well, he could get a job at the hospital.”
Lev frowned. “What?”
“There are security jobs to fill in the hospital. He would still be close to you and doing something.”
“Why are you insisting on torturing me?”
“I thought you said Lexi was bored. I was offering a solution.” Imogen put away the dishes he had just washed.
She was right. It was a perfect solution, even if he hated the idea that Lexi would be so close. But maybe that way he could protect Imogen, the baby and himself all at the same time. Lexi would definitely like it.
Imogen was staring out of the window and she was worrying her bottom lip, thinking. She did that often. He’d noticed it when they’d been in Toronto and again at work today.
Those lips he remembered kissing. How he wished he could take her in his arms and kiss her again. She was so beautiful, and the memories that sustained him did not do her justice.
He couldn’t think about her like that, though.
He had to keep his distance. This marriage was to protect her and his child from the situation at home. He refused to trap her into a life of protocol.
She belonged here in the north.
She deserved to be free. Even if it meant free of him.
“Lexi must really think there’s a threat,” she whispered.
“Yes. There is a threat. I’ve been moved all over. I’ve had places compromised. There are insurgents out there, trying to finish the job and eradicate all the heirs to the throne of Chenar.” He reached down and, with a quick check to make sure it was okay, touched her belly. He knew he wouldn’t be able to feel anything yet but he couldn’t stop himself. “All heirs.”
“Okay.” She turned to face him. “Okay.”
“Okay?” he asked, mystified.
“I’ll marry you.” She worried her lip again.
“You will?” he said, stunned but also relieved that she was agreeing to the marriage.
“But there will be some ground rules,” she said.
“Ground rules?” he asked.
He couldn’t help but wonder what kind of trouble he’d got himself into.
