Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Jenna and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, My Roommate is a Vampire!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

My Roommate is a Vampire asks the age-old question: what would you do if your nocturnal, anachronistic, and undeniably sexy new roommate wasn’t just those three things but was also secretly a vampire? Through the character of Cassie Greenberg (a struggling artist in need of a cheap place to live) a series of heartfelt notes between her and her peculiar new roommate Frederick, and one unexpected set of magical powers, Vampire provides one potential answer.

Please share your favorite line(s) or quote from this book:

So I don’t want to post the direct quote as it is spoilers, but suffice it to say a google search conducted by Frederick, the mysterious roommate after whom the book is named, about 2/3 of the way through the book is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. 😉

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • A significant portion of this book is epistolary — meaning, it is told through letters, emails, texts, and written notes characters leave for each other. I am obsessed with storytelling where the reader knows something that one or more of the characters do not, and where there is a lot more happening behind the scenes than what shows up on the page. Throw in an unreliable narrator and I’m hooked.
  • I knew very early on that I wanted Frederick’s point of view to be presented in a limited way but for maximum impact. To develop this, I drew inspiration from multimedia storytelling methods I was exposed to during my years in online fandom spaces (many of which used epistolary methods of storytelling), as well as from Beth O’Leary’s brilliant The Flatshare. The love story in The Flatshare comes to life almost exclusively through written notes the characters leave for one another, and through it the book captured everything I love most in my favorite stories.
  • Most of all, though, I think this book is fun, funny, and sexy, and I hope readers do too.

What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?

There’s definitely an instant physical attraction between the two of them. Beyond that, though, this romance definitely leans heavily into the Chaos Agent vs. Organized Person trope. Cassie meets Frederick at a time in her life when she is out of options and sees him as a stabilizing influence. Meanwhile, Frederick falls in love with her impulsivity and her inability to be anything but exactly who she is. They are good counterbalances for one another.

Did any scene have you blushing, crying or laughing while writing it? And Why?

There’s a hot and heavy makeout scene in the bathroom at a party they both attend about 2/3 of the way through the book that definitely had me fanning myself while writing it!

Readers should read this book….

If they enjoy comedy in their romance novels, if they enjoy vampire novels that are light on the gory details, and if they enjoy books that play with storytelling methods and how they present different characters’ points of view.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have in the works?

More paranormal romances for the foreseeable future!

Book Info:

True love is at stake in this charming, debut romantic comedy.

Cassie Greenberg loves being an artist, but it’s a tough way to make a living. On the brink of eviction, she’s desperate when she finds a too-good-to-be-true apartment in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood. Cassie knows there has to be a catch—only someone with a secret to hide would rent out a room for that price.

Of course, her new roommate Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is far from normal. He sleeps all day, is out at night on business, and talks like he walked out of a regency romance novel. He also leaves Cassie heart-melting notes around the apartment, cares about her art, and asks about her day. And he doesn’t look half bad shirtless, on the rare occasions they’re both home and awake. But when Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge that definitely weren’t there earlier, Frederick has to come clean…

Cassie’s sexy new roommate is a vampire. And he has a proposition for her.

I like the idea of a story through notes and letters. The trope opposites attract: organized vs disorganized can lead to humorous or angry confrontations.
Chemistry is hard to tame especially when you live together. Hot scenes! Yes! Sounds great!
I enjoyed the Twilight series where I was first exposed to a love story between Edward and Bella. I’m open to this romantic adventure!

  2. Summer

Felt like I burnt myself out on vampires a long time ago but this is such a fresh, fun sounding idea that I really do want to give it a try.

I love vampire stories of all kinds and I’d be interested in reading this one if I know my local library system would order it.
