Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Allison and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, TAKE TWO, BIRDIE MAXWELL!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

Take Two, Birdie Maxwell is a road-trip second-chance romcom, which is a slam dunk with a few of my favorite tropes – namely, second chances, old loves, forced proximity (in a dinky RV) and missed connections. Birdie Maxell, our heroine, is a superstar actress who finds an anonymous love letter in her childhood home and sets out to track down the author in an attempt to resuscitate her career. That her first love is the journalist who hops on board her RV road trip to document her search is just the juicy cherry on top.

Please share your favorite line(s) or quote from this book:

Ahhhh, I can’t share my favorite quote because it comes in one of the very last scenes when it’s revealed who wrote the letter! But I can say that it gave me great satisfaction to write, and I feel like that moment explains so much about the rest of the book that came before it.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

I settled on the RV idea because my family took an RV road trip when I was in high school, and since I was a typical teenage girl, I was salty about it.  My dad and brother thought it was so funny that they put a posted on the exterior of the RV that said, “This is Allison Winn’s RV.” LOLOL. Now, I can find the hilarity in this. Also, I live in Los Angeles, and I don’t think I will ever get tired of exploring the upsides and downsides of fame. It’s such a weird and unusual and specific beast, and I find it fascinating. Oh! And “Birdie” is named after my grandmother, Birdie Dash, who passed away a few years ago at the age of 106, and though she was nothing like this Birdie, she was legendary in her own way.

What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?

They had semi-mutual crushes on each other in high school, but were off-limits because Elliot’s twin sister was and is Birdie’s best friend, Mona. Elliot was sort of the quintessential golden boy while Birdie was an awkward theater kid, but they felt completely at ease with each other nonetheless. Just that intangible, inexplicable chemistry that you have when you meet someone who clicks into place with you.

Did any scene have you blushing, crying or laughing while writing it? And Why?

I love love love the first scene when Elliot and Birdie unexpectedly find themselves reunited, both back in their hometown, both for their own reasons. Mona runs a dingy bar, and they both show up looking for Mona’s counsel, only to be confronted with each other – and they haven’t seen each other or spoken to one another in seven years…since they had a one-nighter that they both tucked away as a secret. There is so much going on in this scene – Birdie’s fame sitting like an elephant in her hometown bar, the sparks flying between these old loves, Mona’s unknowingness, and of course…alcohol.

Readers should read this book….

If you just want a fun, laugh out loud (I hope!) romcom! I think there is so much value in just getting lost in an absolutely great time of a book these days, and I think and hope that Take Two, Birdie Maxwell will put a smile on readers’ faces!

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have in the works?

I’m about two-thirds the way done with my next book, The Insomniacs, about a foursome who meet online when they can’t sleep and decide to solve each other’s problems so they can finally get some rest – and I’m super-excited about it. I’m also eagerly awaiting the final script for The Rewind, my last romcom, which is in development at Netflix.

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Book Info:

Hollywood’s biggest rom-com star tries to recover from her damaged reputation by staging her own rom-com and following a lead on a lost love in the new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Allison Winn Scotch.

Birdie Robinson thought she’d gotten everything she wanted out of life: fame, adoration, and an A-list Hollywood career. But after an on-set feud goes viral, she leaves L.A. for the one place where no one would think to find her: her hometown. She’s startled to stumble upon a love letter from a former boyfriend asking for a second chance. And there’s just one issue: the letter was unsigned and she’s not sure which ex sent it. Still, a public reunion with an ex-boyfriend could turn the wave of public opinion back in her favor. Life imitating art. What could go wrong?

Elliot O’Brien, star reporter, knows that life isn’t an actual rom-com. Case in point, he’s spent two decades repressing his long-simmering feelings for his twin sister’s best friend, Birdie. But with his journalism career cratering and Birdie back in their hometown at the same time he is, he realizes that chronicling her search for her long-ago ex may be his opportunity to right some wrongs.

As they hit the road in an ancient RV, Birdie and Elliot retrace her romantic history for clues to who wrote the letter and come face to face with their own romantic missteps, all while grappling with whether happy endings are found only on the big screen—or whether their own happier ever after could be closer than they both ever imagined.

I would wonder if I was being pranked. I have no idea who would send me an anonymous letter.

What would you do if you received an anonymous love letter? Nothing
Would you immediately know who sent it? No

  3. Mary Preston

I’d try to find out who sent it. A lovely surprise – I would hope.

  4. Texas Book Lover

I wouldn’t have any clue unless they said something in the letter to give it away.

  5. Terrill R

It’s impossible to know if I’d know who sent it. It would all have to do with the circumstances in my work, home, and social life. I’m very intuitive, but if it was a complete stranger to me, there’s know possible way guess.

Depending on if I knew who sent it would determine how I’d respond. If I didn’t know where it came from, I would ignore it.
