Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Melinda and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, The Echo!

To start off, can you please tell us a little bit about this book?:

The Echo is about a woman named Rose, who lost her sister in what was ruled an
accident. But Rose has never believed that Daisy’s death was an accident, and her belief
has led her to lose everything from her job to her friends to her credibility. She’s
drowning in her own life. But when another woman dies under identical circumstances,
Rose sees a way to pull herself out, prove that she’s right, and get the justice Daisy
deserves.

Please share your favorite lines or quote(s) from this book:

Not exactly a quote, but one of my favorite pieces of this story is the way Rose’s sister
“lives” in her head. That is to say, Rose’s subconscious has taken on some of Daisy’s
personality traits like her snark and her belief in signs from the universe. I love that, since
Rose is so practical.

What inspired this book?

Oh, dear. There is something. I can’t because it gives away a bit of the twist. So, I will
just tease and say this book contains a story element I’ve always wanted to incorporate.

How did you ‘get to know’ your main characters? Did they ever surprise you?

Much of the time, I feel like my characters exist in my head without me knowing about it
until they show up in a book. Then they go, “Duh, Melinda. I was here all along!” Rose is
no different. Probably the only thing that surprised me about her was that prior to her
sister’s death, she had previously been a teacher. But once I figured that out, it made so
much sense. The older sister. The helper. The problem solver. The career just fit!

What was your favorite scene to write?

Almost always, my favorite scene is the opening!

“It was raining. Pouring so hard that even with the wipers on full speed, the windshield
remained obscured. It was dark early, too, the clouds doing their damnedest to block out
what remained of the daylight. Still, this was the right place. The Lockwood Gate
Apartments. Home to Rose Mcgovern. The woman who was going to help set things
right.”

What was the most difficult scene to write?

Hmm. I don’t know that there was a scene that stands out for me as being the most
difficult. When I write, I like to say that I “vomit words onto the page.” Colorful and
unpleasant, I know. But I just free flow when I’m working. And I always start the new
workday with a review of the previous day’s output.

Would you say this book showcases your writing style or is it a departure for you?

Since I do write across a variety of genres, I don’t know if I have a specific style. All of
my books feature quick action, fast paces, and realistic characters. So The Echo definitely
fits that mold.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

I hope people are entertained! I want them to get some escape and enjoy it.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?

I just finished up edits for an upcoming YA book about a Type One Diabetic teen getting
stranded on a mountain. It’s close to my heart because I’ve been a T1D since I was nine
years old. My next release (after The Echo) is another thriller from Tule. It’s called The
Choice, and it’s the third book in this Lockwood Gate series.

Excerpt from The Echo:

Déjà vu can be deadly…

A year ago, Rose Mcgovern’s sister was found dead at the bottom of a bridge. A tragic accident. That’s what the police called it. What they still call it. What everyone except Rose believes to be true. But she won’t change her mind. No matter how many seconds and minutes and days go by, no matter how much time she’s had to spend in the psych ward, and no matter how much her life falls apart. She will never give up on her quest for the truth.

And now, it’s happening again.

Another woman’s body has been found. The circumstances are far too similar to be a coincidence. There might even be more victims. Which would mean that Rose was right all along. But the police have long since dismissed her as paranoid, and she’s driven away every friend she’s ever had. With nothing but her own conviction on her side, how can she prove that an accident is really a murder? And even if it’s possible, can she do it before she makes a deadly mistake and the killer claims her life, too?

That a person’s intuition is justified when another similar incident happens. And thus the story begins…

I love a good suspense.Too often women’s ideas, intuition, suspicions are dismissed and they are labeled high strung, delusional, or worse. This sounds like a good study of the consequences.
