REVIEW: A Colby Christmas Rescue by Debra Webb

A Colby Christmas Rescue by Debra Webb is the first book in the new Colby Agency: The Next Generation series. Jamie Colby is part of a secret multi-national agency, along with her partner and friend, Kendrick Poe. During an assignment, Jamie receives word that her brother, who is studying to be a doctor, has been kidnapped. She rushes home with Kendrick by her side, determined to save her brother. The only way to do so is to kidnap a doctor to hand over to the kidnappers. Will Jamie, Kendrick, and the Colby Agency be able to get to the bottom of the mystery in time to save Luke?

I found the romance between Jamie and Kendrick to be lacking here, but the mystery and suspense of the story more than made up for that. This book is filled with plenty of twists and turns that will keep readers engaged and wondering what’s going to happen next. I was also impressed with the author’s ability to make me feel for Luke’s kidnapper; while his methods were obviously not the way to get things done, he was desperate and it was understandable that he felt this was the only way to get what he wanted.

This is a spin-off of the author’s Colby Agency series; I’m not overly familiar with that series, but for readers who are, you’ll get to see many characters from the series in this book. That includes Victoria Colby-Camp and Lucas Camp, the owners of the Colby Agency, who are always on standby. It’s clear the Colby family is a tight-knit group that’s willing to drop everything when one of their own is in trouble.

This is a book about friendship, love, family, and the search for a holiday miracle set at Christmastime. While the romance was lackluster to me, readers who like suspense will enjoy the journey the author takes them on. This book would be for fans of romantic suspense and the friends-to-lovers trope.
