A Springtime Affair by Katie Fforde: Gilly and Helena are a mother and daughter duo who are happy with their lives. Gilly spends her time running a B&B out of her family home after her divorce. Helena is a dedicated weaver who spends most of her time focusing on upcoming events for her work. Both have wrenches thrown in the lives when their lives see unexpected conflicts.
For Gilly, her son and his wife think that she should sell her house in order to contribute to the mansion they want for their family. When she randomly meets a home appraiser named Leo who wants to sweep her off her feet but also keeps mentioning the fact that she should sell the house, she doesn’t know whether to be flattered or annoyed. As he keeps pulling her towards freedom, she is pulling back to Earth by her accountant William, who has her best interest at heart and also harbors hidden feelings for Gilly.
Helena is happy with her studio space until it is bought by Jago and she is told she has to move. With nowhere to go, Jago offers her barn space that is on his list to be remodeled into affordable housing. As the two work to make the space comfortable for her weaving, they start to build a connection against what both of them wanted. When Helena finds out about Jago’s past, can she move past her initial reaction to see the love they have formed?
Gilly was under her husband’s control for so long that she finally has her freedom. When she is interacting with Leo, she feels the control that she has slipping. She stands her ground and makes everyone realize what is important to her in the end. Because of this, she can finally feel free of the control of others and be her own person.
Helena has a gift where she recognizes people instantly and remembers exactly where from. When her gift impacts her relationship with Jago, it really tests her on if she trusts her heart or her head. As her relationship with Jago progresses, it is great to see her really open up to others.
Overall, the book was okay. It is very G-rated, but at the same point in time, it is hard to see the chemistry between the characters especially Helena and Jago. I felt that they really should have had more of a whimsical romance, but it felt very friend zone instead.
