A Vet To Heal His Heart by Caroline Anderson: Ellie had loved working for senior vet Jim at his practice for about eight years. When Jim retired things changed drastically when a corporation bought up the practice. They brought in a new vet who became senior vet. That should have been Ellie’s job. Other things transpired that made Ellie decide she had to leave and start over.
She arrived in Yoxburgh where she has a house that she had made a down payment on and with renters who helped pay the mortgage. The last renters had done a midnight runner, so the house is empty and she will have a place to stay. The agent that helps with her house says it needs some cleaning and a little work. He is underestimating how bad both inside and outside are. As if things weren’t bad enough, Ellie’s beloved dog seriously injures herself on something in the un-mowed yard. As an experienced vet, Ellie knows her dog Lola will die soon if she can’t get her help quickly. Ellie finds a vet clinic that appears closed, but after pounding on the door she is able to get Hugo who lived there. With their skill and determination they are able to do surgery on Lola. Hugo offers
Ellie a cot so she be beside Lola all night.
When daylight arrives , Hugo convinces Ellie that since her home is a disaster zone and Lola needs care that she should stay in the extra flat he has above the clinic. Ellie agrees to help out in the clinic and enjoys the other staff. Hugo wants her to stay on while another vet is on maternity leave
Hugo agrees to help her to clean her house and get some help on bigger repairs. With all the togetherness, the two can’t help feeling like more than friends. Hugo warns Ellie up front that he is not able to have a serious relationship. At first, she agrees, but how can she not help having deep feelings for a man who is so loving towards animals and their owners?
Hugo’s past is slowly revealed over time. His emotional baggage is very heavy and it’s understandable how he keeps his heart protected so he won’r have to endure pain again.
Ellie is a caring person, too. She works hard at being a vet and is often rewarded by situations that turn out perfectly. The stories about the cats and dogs in this novel will pull at your heartstrings and make for a richer reading experience.
This book takes place in England. It does have a universal feel along with a few words I’ve learned from reading British tales.
