An Ex to Remember by Jessica Lemmon: Aubrey Collins and Victor “Vic” Grandin III were a couple as teens and in their early twenties they had a bad breakup due to their different visions of life. Ten years later, a chat in a bar lead them to bed again. Fate decides to take a shot and the next day, Aubrey has an accident at the TCC’s Pool Party (we read about it on book 4 of the series) that ends with her having amnesia. She doesn’t remember her breakup with Vic nor the ten years they were separated. Aubrey thinks she and Vic are still together!!

By doctor’s orders, Vic agrees to help Aubrey with her recovery by pretending to be her boyfriend again. He knows this could end worse than the first time they were together, but also sees it as his second chance with Aubrey. But Aubrey’s amnesia wouldn’t last forever, right? What will happen when her memories come back?

I have to be honest: I started reading this book disliking Vic with ALL my heart. First impressions do count, and mine’s regarding Vic when I read about him in book 3 (book 1 doesn’t count actually because his character there wasn’t enough relevant to pay him the attention he deserved if we compare him with the Vic we see in book 3) wasn’t a good one at all. Nevertheless, as I read this book, I found interesting how things can be different by seeing the whole picture; Vic’s perspective changed all. Yes, he was an arrogant idiot at one moment in his life but Vic’s evolution—from the man he was as a teen and at twenty-one until present day in the story—reveals himself as someone who can learn from his past mistakes.

That said, Vic needed someone to turn him upside down—damn, he still needed a good scolding!—and Aubrey is the perfect heroine to do it. She’s a strong, determined woman, with firm ideas that is not going to be intimidated by anyone. Especially not by a man with outdated ideas (yup, that was Vic at 21…)! She set her goals and she achieved them; nothing would make think her otherwise.

Their breakup left them heartbroken but both were stubborn enough to be separated for ten years. Even with the hard feelings towards each other during those years, their love for each other was still there and it’s palpable. I found Aubrey and Vic’s romance pretty hot with lots of chemistry. At the same time, they bring out the best of each other.

The Texas Cattleman’s Club: Ranchers and Rivals series wouldn’t be complete without the topic that links all the books together: The Thurston family claiming the oil rights in the Grandins and the Lattimores properties. Unlike other books, this one have less details but we can see a significant progress regarding the situation between the three families. Also, we know new characters that will add more to that specific topic. Also, there’re Aubrey’s parents and the Grandin siblings. On that last note, I liked how Vic’s ideas and visions towards the Grandin ranch evolve while he realizes the family is better as an united front than being by their own. And the family dynamics gets better together.

When I met Vic I wished for a story with a great heroine who would make him suffer. And this is a perfect one. Not only that, Vic gets the redemption he craves and deserves, making him a better man. And Aubrey is the special sauce of this book: one of the best heroines the TCC franchise has. This is a well written story with an attractive argument, mature situations and the way hero and heroine interact to each other is fully credible. As for the series itself, this book keeps you intrigued about the legal claim. Looking forward the next book so far.
