Breaking the Single Mom’s Rules by J.C. Harroway: Kat has come home to New Zealand to practice medicine after leaving England behind. She needs to help her parents and have more support for her 5 year old daughter Lucy. She is a single mother since once she told her boyfriend she was pregnant, he told her he wanted no part of being a father and left. She now has a rule that she will stay away from romantic relationships and make her daughter first priority.
Nash, who usually goes by his last name Grady, has been working in emergency medicine for a long while as a nurse practitioner. He is mainly in charge of his daughter Molly since his ex-wife is a flight attendant and also fairly unreliable.
On Kat’s first day in the emergency department, she and Grady most definitely don’t “meet cute”. Kat’s hackles are up when she finds out Grady has not gone through protocol and taken over an elderly patient’s case with tests and admission. He tries to explain it was not going over Kat’s head, but preventing more discomfort for the patient. Kat is still miffed. They both realize there has to be a truce and civil discourse between them.
They learn well how to work as a team. Unfortunately, even though they have lots of other baggage, they can’t help be attracted to each other especially after the find out at school pickup time that their daughters have become instant best friends. Can becoming close cause problems with their daughters and work, especially with Grady’s ex trying to stir the pot?
The author has done a fabulous job of making all the medical details authentic. I have truly grown to enjoy the Harlequin Medical Romance line. The combination of medical drama and romance makes for a learning and entertaining blend.
I appreciate both main characters. They have both been through so much. It’s hard for them to trust and take a chance on love again. It is great that the author made the female character a doctor and the male a nurse. That happens a lot these days. I have had nothing but wonderful care from nurse practitioners in recent years.
This novel is the second in a duet. If you haven’t read the first one yet you need to do it ASAP.
