Christmas on the Ranch touched a chord in me, as a large theme of the story is about forgiveness. And right now with the holiday of Yom Kippur approaching, in the middle of what the Jewish faith calls the “10 days of awe”, it is a time of reflection, seeking atonement and trying to do better in the year ahead.
In The Rancher’s Christmas Baby by Arlene James, Dixon is confronted with the opportunity to give his mother a second chance. He is forced to take a fresh look at his childhood, in which he felt abandoned by her, and to look at it from her perspective. He starts to take an understanding approach and a kinder one to his mother who is now in frail health, and to bond with his baby sister. Dixon is also very much drawn to his mother’s close friend Fawn, who aims to bring about a reconciliation between Dixon and his mother Jackie. I was extremely touched by this story!
In Christmas Eve Cowboy by Lois Richer, readers are introduced to Elizabeth and her adorable daughter Zoey. They’ve just moved to a small ranching town, and are working on getting acclimated and meeting new people. Elizabeth is the new doctor in town. When Zoey sees puppies for sale, they meet Brett for the first time, who is instantly captivated by Elizabeth AND her daughter. Both Brett and Elizabeth are haunted by past relationships in which their partner denigrated them and their abilities. Can they overcome their insecurities to nurture a beautiful, fast growing friendship and develop it into something deeper? I highly recommend Christmas Eve Cowboy!
