In Danger in the Depths by Addison Fox, NYPD diver Wyatt Trumbull and his team are facing a mystery; the bodies of kayakers are being pulled out of the river with safes taped to them. He turns to Marlowe McCoy to crack open the safes to find out what’s inside them. But when one of the safes has something that implicates her own family, Wyatt becomes determined to not only solve the mystery, but to keep Marlowe safe at the same time.
Marlowe and Wyatt both have good hearts and are well-meaning, despite the personal baggage they both have. I also enjoyed reading about their professions; I’ve never read a story about a police diver or a safe cracker before. It was nice to see some different and unique professions featured in a book. The author does a good job describing the underwater scenes and almost makes the reader feel like they’re right there under the water with Wyatt. I did feel the romance was overshadowed by everything else that was going on in the story, which made it feel like the romance was a little underdeveloped. I still liked them as a couple though.
There wasn’t quite as much suspense in this book as I was expecting, but it was still a page-turner. There’s some mystery, and there’s one twist that completely blindsided me. I thought the author handled it well and I liked that she threw that into the story so it wasn’t too predictable.
Danger in the Depths is a story filled with secrets, lies, danger, and romance. It’s the first book in the New York Harbor Patrol series, and it’s a good start to the series. There were some other characters on Wyatt’s team that readers are introduced to and I’m looking forward to reading more about them. If you enjoy mystery and suspense mixed with romance, you should consider giving this book a read.
