Dark-WhispersDark Whispers by Debra Webb: Natalie Drummond believes she might be going crazy. After taking a fall down the stairs a couple years earlier and suffering a traumatic brain injury as a result, she doesn’t really trust herself. When she calls the cops and tells them she shot an intruder but they find no evidence, they assume she’s hallucinating as a result of her TBI. She turns to the newly formed B&C Investigations for help.

Clint Hayes, a former homicide detective who left the force to join B&C with his former co-worker, is assigned the case. He initially has his doubts as to what Natalie claims to have happened, but when other things occur and it becomes clear that someone really is targeting Natalie, he throws himself into his job to not only find who was responsible, but to protect her as well. They both can’t help but wonder if Natalie’s fall wasn’t really an accident at all. With Natalie’s memories around the time of the accident being fragmented, they rush to put the pieces of the puzzle together before Natalie winds up dead.

This series is a spin-off of another series, Faces of Evil. Some of the characters from that series make an appearance in this one. I haven’t read any of the books in that series, so I did feel like I was missing some background. For instance, there were some mentions about a situation Jess, the founder of B&C, faced when on the police force, only it didn’t go into detail. It felt like it was expected that readers already knew the details. Something similar happened with Clint’s friends on the police force, who were helping out with Clint’s investigation.

That being said, I enjoyed this book. It’s fast paced with a good amount of mystery. The twist was one I didn’t expect, which I really liked. There’s few things worse than reading mystery but figuring out the who’s and what’s in the middle of the story; there’s definitely no fear of that happening here.

I also enjoyed the fact that the romance between Clint and Natalie was second to figuring out what was going on. Because of that, the characters got to really know each other before starting up a relationship.

Dark Whispers is a good start to this new series, and I’m looking forward to reading about the other investigators at B&C Investigations. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys some mystery and suspense mixed in with some romance.

03.5S September 1, 2016 | Harlequin Intrigue | Faces of Evil: Private Eyes #1

Former homicide detective Clint Hayes has his first client as a private investigator: a fragile beauty he isn’t sure he can trust. An injury has left Natalie Drummond with gaps in her memory, and she sees and hears things that aren’t there. But she’s sure she shot an intruder in her Birmingham mansion. So where’s the body, the gun, the evidence? When it’s clear someone is trying to kill his vulnerable client, Clint appoints himself her protector, working overtime not to fall for her. But someone is dead set that Natalie never regains her memories—or makes new ones with Clint.
