Darkness by Karen Robards took me on a fast paced journey complete with adrenaline rush in Darkness. Gina is working on a small isolated island in Alaska with a small team, when out of the sky on a stormy day Gina is out alone, a plane crashes. Already in her boat, Gina is able to save Cal…not knowing the dangers they will soon face. Cal is a bit of a mystery…he can’t reveal too much to Gina, and neither of them is sure if they can trust the other. Evil and corruption has followed them, and it will take all their skills to evade and escape. But to get off the island alive, they’ll need to put their head together, Gina will need to follow Cal’s direction if they want to stay safe, hoping for a rescue. Due to circumstances or fate, they develop a quick, hot connection…but will it matter if they can’t escape danger on Attu Island? Darkness and danger are chasing them, and Gina finds herself having to rely on this man, a basic stranger for her survival. Will they do it? Will they escape whoever is out to get them and have a chance together when all is said and done?
I really liked Cal and Gina. I like the bit of mystery they both have about themselves, and they are cautious with each other even as the heat starts to flair between them. Gina has had unusual experiences in life, and these have helped shape her into a strong, determined woman who wants to live. I really liked her strong character and how she was part of the action alongside Cal instead of always in the background. Of couse I loved the so alpah Cal! He knows exactly what he’s doing, and has a plan to save them. but doesn’t leave Gina to meekly follow along. These two are both stand out characters, neither overshadows the other which I love. But will it work? As they are on the run, hiding and hoping, the connection between them grows quickly. Even though they don’t know what the future will hold or even if they’ll have one, they both find themselves hoping for something more. I liked the connection and feeling between these two characters. They are brought together quickly, but it all just worked.
Darkness really is all about Cal and Gina. There are some important secondary characters, but they are much more on the periphery.
I loved Karen’s descriptions of the island an the weather! I could hear that ocean roaring, hear and see the birds. Her descripiteves really made the island real and easy to viusalize.
The pace if perfect, and even with the plot taking place mostly over a very short time this works in Darkness. I’d highly recommend Darkness by Karen Robards to any romantic suspense reader.
