In Gabriel’s Outlaw by Sandra Chastain, Gabriel St. Claire is an agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He has been happy not to return home in many years and to be away from his family problems, but now after he is on desk duty due to an injury he is assigned to escort Jessie James in a Gold Rush celebration where she will reenact a historical wagon train ride to deliver her family gold, which has been kept in a safety deposit box in the bank for many years, to the capitol building in Atlanta. But what his superiors don’t take into account is how much hate is between the St. Claire and the James clan going back a few generations. And how due to their own past, Jesse may not be agreeable to him being part of her train trip.
Jesse has not forgotten Gabriel, not how he used to be her best friend or how he broke her heart after he left. Now after a decade he suddenly appears and he claims to be the guest that the governor wants to accompany her and the train with the gold. But how can she trust him after everything that happened, and how he betrayed her by trying to take away her land, the piece of the mountain that her family and his family have not been able to fully claim without the other giving away their rights. Can she trust him to actually be there on behalf of the governor and not to steal her gold? She does not know what he has been up to in the past decade, and neither does his family, which just makes her wonder even more how much can she trust him, not only with her gold but also her heart.
Jesse and Gabriel will embark on an adventure with some very fun characters that will make you laugh with their eccentricities. But also they will make you wonder just what happened in the past, that ruined their friendship, but also between their families and what tore them apart to the point the were like sworn enemies.
The love scenes and the depth of analysis of their feelings that Jesse and Gabriel go through before they finally realize they love each other is quite enlightening. And when you discover the truth behind the hate between the families is something that breaks your heart but also brings understanding and closure. Jesse did get on my nerves a lot with her stubborn ways, even if I kind of understood the reason of her actions, but I still believe she needed to use her head a little more instead of just acting irrationally all the time. But overall, the story was quite entertaining and fun to read.
If you like a fun and entertaining read that will make you laugh throughout the book, you will like Gabriel’s Outlaw by Sandra Chastain.
