Harper and the Single Dad by Amy Andrews: I accidentally read #2 in this series first. The reader needs to read the series in order. This first one makes plain many of the issues in book #2. I am usually very OCD when reading series in order and need to be more careful in the future.
Dr. Harper returns to Sydney after twelve years away in London. She has been hired as the Head of the ER. Her very first day, before getting to know people, she is thrown into the fray of a very difficult, intense case. If that weren’t enough, Yarran who is a firefighter brings in the fire victim. They were very close and Yarran had proposed twelve years ago. Harper ran off and left Yarran heartbroken.
Yarran has gone on with life. It hasn’t been good since he lost his wife. The only thing had lifts him up and keeps him going is his son Jarrah. The boy loves spending time with his grandparents and others when his dad has to work.
Harper has never really explained why she took off so suddenly all those years ago. She has missed her close friends from before. Two of them welcome her back. Ali, Yarran’s twin, is not so forgiving. She actually felt the pain and heartbreak he suffered when Harper left.
It was easy to be engaged by Yarran. He had been through so much, but lived for his son and his work. I liked that he was an Indigenous Australian. The aboriginal people of Australia are often overlooked. It was good to learn a little about his background.
Harper is a dedicated doctor and truly cares for her patients. I enjoyed how the author slowly revealed her past and how it impacted her decisions that others didn’t understand.
The romance is more of a slow burn. You can see how Yarran is torn between loving Harper again and protecting himself and his son. Jarran is just an adorable child who has coped well for the most part from losing his mother at an early age.
The setting is Sydney, but just like book #2. The issues are pretty universal with well known American food mentioned.
I continue to enjoy medical romances with the adrenaline rushes and learning new information .I look forward to the next two novels in this interconnected series.

Thanks for the review. It’s good to know when books in a series depend on earlier ones

I prefer series that stand alone and don’t have to be read in order.
