In I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas (Half Moon Hollow #2.7) by Molly Harper, Gigi Scanlon’s sister Iris raised her after their parents passed away when Gigi was twelve. So not seeing her sister has been difficult while away at college. But it was probably good timing, considering Iris is a newly turned vampire and has to learn to control herself before being around her human little sister. So, in other words, Christmas should be interesting this year.
“We’re not normal, Iris. We never have been. And I think that’s awesome.”
Iris laughed, leaning until her forehead bumped against mine. “Thanks, Gigi.”
Gigi’s trip home to Half Moon Hollow turns out to be plenty eventful. With vampires, werewolves, and humans to visit, presents to buy, jobs to ponder, a boyfriend to possibly break up with…she has her hands full. And that’s even before a devastatingly sexy vampire appears from out of nowhere several times, only to kiss her senseless. Who knew the holidays could be so confusing?
‘Honestly, who vampire-speed-walks up to a total stranger on a public sidewalk, gives her the most earth-shattering, life-altering kiss of her life, and then just–poof–disappears? That is not good manners.’
I’m Dreaming of an Undead Christmas is exactly what I expected–and hoped for–in a Christmas novella by the one and only Molly Harper. Lots of fun, lots of hijinks, and we get to play catch-up with everyone in Half Moon Hollow. What could be better?
This time around it was Gigi’s turn to give us an inside look into her thoughts to see what crazy things were going on in her life. I loved that she was just as smart and strong-willed as her sister, Iris, and that she had total faith in her newly turned vampire sister to not attack her. Their strong sisterly connection was still there, even after Iris’s transformation and with Gigi being away at college for months. I also thought that Cal (Iris’s husband) turned out to be a great father figure to Gigi. Although he was rather obsessed with her safety, teaching her tons of self-defense techniques, comically testing them out by sneaking up on her. So funny.
Now, this was a prequel novella setting us up for Gigi’s own full-length novel, The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire, being released in early Spring of 2015. (Can’t wait!) You could probably get away with reading this as a standalone short story, but I think reading the books in order would help fill in some gaps where there are a lot of characters to follow here. As always, I thought Ms. Harper’s writing was witty, snarky, and just plain old hilarious. I found myself laughing more often than not with all the terrific dialogue and situations these wacky characters get into. The addition of the mystery vampire following Gigi was a nice touch. Kind of stalkerish…but in a sexy way. 😉
Fans of Half Moon Hollow will enjoy this (too short!) novella. I am really looking forward to my next literary visit to the town and to see what will happen next to my favorite quirky book characters ever.
