Midwife’s Three-Date Rule by Alison Roberts: Pippa Gordon works as a midwife for the Labor & Delivery department of a hospital in an area near London. She has lots of experience and is able to do many birthing procedures and really only need doctors’ help for emergencies for the most part. She usually works nights where it always seems to be busy.

Her department has been notified that a new doctor is starting as Head of Department. The one who just left was difficult and old-fashioned at times. The nurses and midwives are surprised that the new doctor is the younger and very handsome Lachlan Smythe.

Lachlan doesn’t believe it when he is thrown into a life or death emergency his first night. Thanks to his skill and the professionalism of Pippa, they save the patient and her baby. Lachlan wants to thank Pippa for her help and kindness to him early on. He suggests that he will take her out to dinner. Pippa tells him she has a three-date rule. They can go out three times and then they can just go back to being friends and co-workers. That works for them both. Pippa was married and tried to have children which ended in heartbreaking disaster. Lachlan has his own reasons for not wanting a commitment.
They are both are surprised by the chemistry they have from their first date. Will they be able to stay just friends or will attraction win?

Both of the protagonists are very vulnerable. It’s understandable as the reader learns more of their back story. They are also quite good at their jobs and remaining calm under very stressful incidents.

The author shared her father was a doctor. It shows in the plot. She has a great deal of knowledge about labor and delivery. As one who worked in a hospital blood bank many years ago, I was very impressed about how she made it all very authentic.

The setting is England which works well. I don’t know how much midwives are allowed to do in America, but Pippa seems quite advanced in what she is able to do. Harlequin Medical Romances always give the reader new information along with an uplifting romance.
