In Misunderstandings (Woodfalls Girls #2) by Tiffany King, Brittni Mitchell regrets giving in to her friend Melissa’s wishes to travel to Seattle for an engagement party. Especially when she gets trapped in an elevator with her ex-boyfriend, Justin Avery, whom she hasn’t seen in two years. That was when he shattered her heart and humiliated Brittni in front of the students at the University of Washington.
‘Our relationship was not the kind of whirlwind love story you read about. It didn’t start with insta-love or even insta-lust. It was a slow build that progressed with each new detail we discovered about each other.’
Brittni once thought of Justin as the potential love of her life. And that’s saying something, considering she’s not the type to believe in long-term relationships. Then thanks to a tough situation and some miscommunication between them as well as their friends, everything fell apart. Brittni was forced to make decisions that still haunt her today. Now faced with Justin, she’s not sure if they can ever work through the hurt and the words they’ve thrown at each other in the past. But he still stirs something within her that Brittni might not be able to ignore any longer.
“How could you do that to us?” Justin asked raggedly, finally meeting my eyes. “Why do I still want you after everything you did?” he added harshly, tightening his grip around my hand until it was almost painful.
Misunderstandings is a powerful New Adult novel that had me feeling every emotion under the sun. Get ready to have your heart tied up in knots before it all works out in the end, folks.
I’ve seen some mixed reviews for book two in the Woodfalls Girls series online, but I personally enjoyed it. New Adult novels seem to be the source of wild swings in opinions…people either love them or hate them which leads to very interesting reviews sometimes. 😉 I thought author Tiffany King did a wonderful job here, especially with the mixture of scenes from both the present day and the past, all in Brittni’s POV. The way the scenes were woven together kept giving us hints as to what the “big event” was that caused Brittni and Justin to part ways. I liked learning about our protagonists piece by piece this way and thankfully it wasn’t confusing (to me).
I appreciated both Brittni and Justin’s characters quite a bit. I thought they were funny, and even though their personalities were very different, they complimented each other well. It helped that they were equally sarcastic, too. The plotline itself was an interesting twist. They were stuck in an elevator together so it forced them to have to communicate for the first time since their break up two years before. It could have gone a few different ways, but I did like the turnout. I can see why some readers have commented that they thought Brittni and Justin resolved their issues with fewer fireworks than most angsty novels, but I actually liked that fact. Not that I don’t enjoy some angst in the novels I read, but to me this seemed like a plausible, realistic ending.
The title Misunderstandings gives us a heads up that we readers are in for a topsy-turvy ride when we dive in to this book. But it’s definitely worth it.

Just when she thought things were going up…
Two years after a devastating breakup, Brittni Mitchell has moved on from Justin Avery—or so she tells herself. She’s trapped with the last person she wants to face, and forced to recount the past she desperately wants to forget.
She’s going to have to look back…
When Brittni left her podunk hometown for a big city college experience at the University of Washington, hooking up with a guy like Justin Avery was not part of her plan. Between Justin’s attention-grabbing tattoos, cigarette smoking, and bad boy attitude Brittni quickly chalked him up as Mr. Wrong.” But his charm was unrelenting, and Brittni’s decision to give Justin a chance quickly turned into the worst choice she ever made.
So that she might be able to move forward.
Now she’s stuck with Justin—literally—and the complicated web of misunderstandings that tied up the truth for two years is about to unravel.

This sounds like a good book. Can it be read as a standalone or do I have to read book #1 first?

You can definitely read this as a standalone. Each book is about a different girl from Woodfalls, and although the stories may intersect a bit, they are independent of each other.
