In Munro (Immortals After Dark #18) by Kresley Cole, Lykae Sentinel Munro MacRieve has known centuries of war, loss, and responsibility yet he’s still counting on the fact that a mate does exist for him. After seeing his twin brother, Will, find his fated love, Munro holds onto that familial happiness to see himself through being tortured at the hands of evil warlocks. Then the unthinkable happens: he finds his mate, a mortal blade wielder named Kereny “Ren” Codrina, only to lose her. But if it takes Munro another century–whether it be in the past, future, or present day–he will not only find Kereny, he’ll convince her to become undying so they can have forever together.

“What you want from me is forbidden.”
“But there’s temptation in the forbidden, no?” Golden eyes gone molten, he said, “Let me show you how wicked we can be together.”

Feelings of deja vu are not common with Ren, but as she’s standing in front of her carnie family, ready to wed her long-time best friend, she knows something is off. Being abducted by a Lykae warrior–one of the types of immortals she’s been raised to kill–doesn’t fit into her wedding day plans. But soon Ren is on the run with Munro. As she tries to find a way to get back to her family of the heart, the annoyingly handsome wolf somehow works his way into her soul. She’s not sure a happy ending is in her future, given her job as a huntress, as well as all that’s standing in their way. Although Ren is slowly becoming convinced that teaming up with Munro and his clan might give them the only chance to see things through.

“I spared you because I kill evil immortals. You’re not evil; merely insufferable.”
“Then insufferable Lykae must be just your type–because I’m doing it for you.”
He was. God help her.

Kresley Cole is back!!!! Seeing her name on a new Immortals After Dark novel made this reader so very happy, knowing there was a whole lot of goodness waiting for us between those pages. And Munro’s story didn’t disappoint. Filled with dangerous foes, impossible situations, bravery, passion and love, this was an intoxicating new addition to the series.

He cradled her face with a look in his eyes, as if she were his every dream, wish, and fantasy rolled into one. “You astonish me, love.”
She gave him a saucy grin. “I plan to be full of surprises. Just try to keep up, old wolf.”
“Ah, my wee harridan.”

I’ll start off by quickly asking to please *not* bash or put down Kresley Cole or her work. I know it’s been a few years since she released anything new, but she obviously had her reasons for taking a break. And now she’s brought her IAD series back with a bang. Because, seriously, Munro and Ren’s book was an emotional roller coaster–in the best of ways–and found them in several of what seemed to be no-win situations. But of course true (fated) love always wins, right? In their case, absolutely. And what a tender, perfect HFN ending Ren and Munro received. *sigh*

It was nice to see that KC didn’t hold back on the complexity of the storyline and that she still created characters who were flawed but relatable–even in a fantasy setting, which isn’t easy to accomplish. Munro and Ren were an interesting pair. They were both warriors in their own right so it made for some verbal clashes that were funny and heated. They each made mistakes but it was the lack of communication at times that I thought caused them the most issue. Once they were on the same page, though, what a team Ren and Munro became.

I think fans will have fun catching up with previous characters and seeing where things stand now in the Accession. We even got a fair amount of time with fan favorites Lothaire and Nix. And that teaser at the end? KC is setting up the next installment to be an exciting one!

QOTD: Have you read any of the Immortals After Dark books? If so, any favorite couples, characters, or moments?

TORMENTED IN UNIMAGINABLE WAYS

Coming off torture at the hands of his warlock captors, Munro MacRieve never expected to find his mate, or to lose her just as abruptly. Driven to desperation, the ruthless warrior uses his enemies’ own powers to reunite with her—in the distant past.

STOLEN FROM HER TIME

When a crazed werewolf crashes her wedding, Kereny “Ren” Codrina does what any cunning huntress would do: she captures him. Yet she finds herself softening toward the wounded beast—until he turns the tables and forces her into an incomprehensible future.

CAN A HUMAN AND AN IMMORTAL UNITE IN ORDER TO SURVIVE?

As danger mounts, Munro will do anything to make her undying, even sell his soul to an evil sorceress. But first he must convince his fiery mate that she belongs with him. If seduction means her survival, Munro will use every weapon in his arsenal to possess her—forever.

I was very pleased (and surprised!) to see that this one is finally out, thanks to Wendy the SuperLibrarian tweeting a link to your review. I’m a bit torn, I confess; I want to get it because I’ve been waiting for Munro’s story since MacRieve came out (yikes, in 2013!), but the HFN in your review gives me pause. Decisions, decisions…

It was definitely nice to get Munro’s part of the story. And KC didn’t pull any punches, making him *earn* his future with Ren! I think of this as a HFN ending more because of the Accession continuing and the teaser at the end about a character that will be in future books–not necessarily because of Ren & Munro’s situation. I’m sure we’ll see them again and what changes the future brings for them, but it doesn’t sound like they’ll be the focus next time. Happy reading!!
