Never Rescue a Rogue by Virginia Heath is the second book in The Merriwell Sisters series. I really enjoyed the first book so I was looking forward to this one. And it was so much better than I thought it would be. This book had more intrigue and witty banter than the first book and the connection between the characters could be felt from the beginning. I always love a good enemy-to-lover plot and this book certainly had sparks flying everywhere during the interactions of the main characters.
“…for some inexplicable reason I love you and, much to your chagrin, you love me, too. I know that scares you, and heaven only knows I don’t deserve you, but we both know that there is nobody else we would each like to spend eternity with and, quite frankly, nobody else who could stand us enough to want to. So, marry me. Today…tomorrow… in twenty years if you feel I deserve to be tortured that long. I do not care so long as you say yes.”
Giles Sinclair lives to scandalize his father the Duke of Harpenden. When the duke summons him, Giles readies himself for a lecture only to discover the secret he and the duke kept was at risk of being exposed. The duke’s unexpected death leaves Giles with the title and the threat of blackmail. Now Giles must find the truth or be ruined. Who better to help him than his foe Diana who lives to uncover truths?
Diana Merriwell has her secrets and one of them is that she is the mysterious Sentinel, a reporter who uncovers the truth behind Society’s corruption and reveals it in the gossip column of The London Tribute. Her family thinks she is just a corrector of grammar and articles, not the notorious reporter that exposes titled and wealthy men’s true characters. Helping Giles uncover the truth should be easy but the close proximity required reveals the truth behind their real feelings.
This was a fun historical romance, and the main characters had the perfect love/hate relationship. Their witty interactions and hilarious incidents kept the book interesting and fast-paced. Giles and Diana’s family and friends suspected they had feelings for each other and I loved watching them figure it out for themselves. This will be a book that is hard to follow and I look forward to seeing the last Merriwell sister’s story.

Diana Merriwell and Giles Sinclair only tolerate one another for the sake of their nearest and dearest. Everyone believes that the two of them are meant to be together, but Diana and Giles know that their constant pithy barbs come from a shared disdain—not a hidden attraction. Diana loves the freedom of working at the newspaper too much to give it up for marriage, and Giles is happily married to his bachelor lifestyle. But they do have one thing in common—the secrets they can’t risk escaping.
When Giles’ father, the curmudgeonly Duke of Harpenden unexpectedly turns up his toes, it’s only a matter of time before someone comes crawling out of the woodwork who knows the true circumstances of his only son’s birth. As the threat of blackmail becomes real, Giles must uncover the truth of his parentage first, or else he and all those who depend upon him will be ruined—and dogged bloodhound Diana is his best hope at sniffing out the truth. As Giles and Diana dive into his family’s past, the attraction that the two of them insisted wasn’t there proves impossible to ignore. Soon, the future of the Sinclair estate isn’t the only thing on the line…
