In One Night, One Unexpected Miracle (Hope Children’s Hospital #2) by Caroline Anderson, Alice Baxter believes she’ll never have a baby of her own. But when she spends an incredible night with Marco Ricci and then a few weeks later discovers she’s pregnant, she’s over the moon. Still, there’s always the possibility she may lose the miracle she’s carrying if she’s not careful. Will Alice and Marco get the happy ever after they both deserve or will they lose their shot at forever?
”What this? I don’t understand.”
He sighed again. “Yes, you do, Alice, because it’s just here, between us, all the time,” he told her, waving his hand back and forth between them, “and it’s getting in the way of work. We need to talk about it.”
“You’re imagining it,” she said, but she couldn’t hold his eyes, and he unfolded his arms and reach out and turned her head gently to face him.
“Am I?” he murmured.
I’ve read a few books by Ms. Anderson and they’ve been a mix of hits and misses, but this one took me as a reader on an emotional journey where the possibility of the heroine losing her baby is high; the medical emergencies these two handle bring their patients and their families to breaking point because it’s hard to see a young child in so much pain; and the story and characters had me reading quickly, determined to discover what would happen next. Will their patients be all right? The way this story started with the prologue sets up this story really well and gives readers knowledge of how strong the chemistry is between these two.
As for the dialogue, it kept me entertained from start to finish due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine, because the baby she’s having really is a miracle. Will the baby be all right? Will Alice allow Marco into her life and help her through the ups and downs they face when it comes to their unborn child and the medical emergencies they handle? Moreover, I really liked how Marco is with Alice because their night together was only ever supposed to be that. Yet, it’s hard for Marco to stay away from the heroine. Will the heroine be able to let go of the hurts of her past to have a future with Marco?
He resisted the overwhelming urge to smirk, restricting himself to a slight smile and a tiny shake of the head. “Did that nearly kill you?”
She looked away, but not before he saw her mouth twitch. “Don’t be ridiculous. Your ego’s showing again.”
“Oh, dear. Me and my ego. We’re always in trouble.”
With the heroine, she’s strong and brave when it comes to handling everything she has to deal with such as what happens during her pregnancy and what happens with her patients. I also liked how kind and caring she is when it comes to her patients and giving help to families that need it, especially families that are struggling to deal with their child’s medical condition. Really, her empathy is truly what makes her a brilliant doctor. While the hero, he had me smiling at various times throughout because he has such a way with kids. He’s kind, caring, compassionate and I loved how he uses whatever he can to put a child at ease because surgery can be a little daunting. Yet, I couldn’t help but sympathize with him when it comes to his relationship with his family. Will his family ever be able to forgive him for putting his needs above what everyone wanted for him?
Overall, Ms. Anderson has delivered a really good read in this book where emotions run high; the chemistry between this couple was tangible; the romance was wonderful and had me loving that Alice took a chance on Marco, even though it’s hard for her to trust; and the ending had me loving the hero’s determination to make things right with the heroine after their relationship goes awry. No way is he going to let her go and will do anything to prove how much he loves her. Will Alice believe Marco, especially with what happened with her last relationship when the man she loved and she thought loved her back walked away so easily? However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as family is important and I loved how everything worked out for not only Marco and Alice, but also with Marco repairing his relationship with his family. They have such a strong bond now. I would recommend One Night, One Unexpected Miracle by Caroline Anderson, if you enjoy medical romances, the opposites attract trope, workplace romances or books by authors Tina Beckett, Annie O’Neil, Alison Roberts and Amalie Berlin.
