In Phoenix Reborn by JD Tyler, Noah Brooks, the nurse of the Alpha Pack who happens to be human, knows that Phoenix “Nix” Monroe is his Bondmate–the one person he’s destined to be with. The only problem is that Nix is denying their bond. He can’t bring himself to admit he’s gay, even while his wolf pushes him to claim Noah.
I loved Noah. Although disappointed with Nix’s denial of their bond, he still remained upbeat and positive. He always managed to find things in the way Nix acted or said that continued to give him hope that Nix would come around and accept their bond.
Nix was so-so for me. On one hand I felt bad for him; he grew up with a father who was homophobic and threatened to kill anyone Nix ever ended up with. He seemed to truly believe that by denying the bond he was keeping Noah safe. His relationship with his father also caused Nix to deny his sexuality, cutting himself off from who he really was. On the other hand, some of the ways he treated Noah were awful, including saying hurtful things to him in front of the entire pack and participating in a drug trial that could have affected their bond.
Being a novella, the story moved quickly and some things felt a bit rushed, including Nix’s confrontation with his father and the confrontation with Jinn, the Dark Sorcerer.
Even though this is book 7.5 in the series, it can be read as a standalone. Characters from the previous books do make appearances in this one, but the book focuses mainly on Noah, Nix, and their journey to happiness rather than the other characters.
If you have read the previous books in the series and enjoyed them, or you if like paranormal stories, this may be a read for you.
