Rainy Day Sisters: A Hartley-by-the-Sea Novel by Kate Hewitt: What I love so much about Kate Hewitt’s writing is that she always seems to write characters that worm their way into your heart and stay there. This amazing book is no different. Set in a small English town this is the story of two estranged sisters that find forgiveness, find love and find truths long buried. This is the story of Lucy and Juliet.
Lucy and Juliet could not be more different as sisters go. Lucy is a dreamer, an artist, the person who makes friends easily and wants to find love and acceptance. Juliet is guarded, frightened, stoic. She has a hard time opening up, she has a hard time making friends, and she is resentful of the half sister that seemed to get all of their mothers love and attention. Yet for their differences, what each are unaware of is that neither felt loved by their mother. Juliet knows that her mother never loved her, never wanted her, she was told this at the age of 19. Lucy has always been put down, ignored, and in the end, her artistic showing was cancelled due to her mother’s awful treatment and rantings in the press.
Lucy is looking for a place to regroup, so she goes to England looking to make peace and reconnect with the sister that she has not seen or heard from in over 5 years. Juliet does not want Lucy in her home, does not want the reminder of everything that she longed for and never got. But the longer that the sisters are together, the more that they open up to each other, the closer they grown and the love and friendship that they never thought possible is shining bright for them both.
In the end, these two tattered souls find life and love in the sleepy little English town, make peace with the past and discover that the bonds of sisterly love are bonds that cannot be broken. I truly enjoyed the journey that Lucy and Juliet were on, watching them fall in love and the struggles that came from misunderstandings and hurt feelings just made them all the more real. There is a big AH HA moment with their mother when she finally comes clean about the past, but no spoilers for you guys.
I would recommend this book to anyone that loves a sweet HEA and the bonds of sisterly love and the struggles to build a loving relationship with the one person who knows more about the struggles that you face then you might think.

Welcome to Hartley-by-the-Sea in England’s beautiful Lake District, where two sisters who meet as strangers find small miracles tucked into the corners of every day….
When Lucy Bagshaw’s life in Boston falls apart, thanks to a scathing editorial written by her famous artist mother, she accepts her half sister Juliet’s invitation to stay with her in a charming seaside village in northern England. Lucy is expecting quaint cottages and cream teas, but instead finds that her sister is an aloof host, the weather is wet, windy, and cold, and her new boss, Alex Kincaid, is a disapproving widower who only hired her as a favor to Juliet.
Despite the invitation she offered, Juliet is startled by the way Lucy catapults into her orderly life. As Juliet faces her own struggles with both her distant mother and her desire for a child, her sister’s irrepressible optimism begins to take hold. With the help of quirky villagers, these hesitant rainy day sisters begin to forge a new understanding…and find in each other the love of family that makes all the difference.
