Revenge at the Altar by Louise Fuller is a passionate second chance/enemies to lovers romance for a couple who learn to forgive and try again on the way to their real happy ever after.
Heiress Margot Duvernay was heartbroken at 19 when her secret lover Max Montigny told her he’d only been after her money. Now, years later, she’s healed those cracks in her heart, or so she’d thought until Max shows up in her life again.
Financially ruined by Margot’s family, Max had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and started over, but never forgiven Margot for not believing in him when it counted. In a position to exact revenge, Max has bought shares in the Duvernay champagne company from Margot’s reprobate father, and issued an ultimatum: marry him or lose the family business! Max has pictured his revenge for years and it’s in his grasp – but what will happen when he finds himself falling in love with the one woman he’s not supposed to want anymore?
I really enjoyed this romance! It’s clear that there is more to the story of how Max and Margot broke up than at first glance. On the surface, it looks like Max proposed, Margot rejected him, and Max countered his hurt feelings by telling her it was all a scam in the first place. They both have reasons to despise each other, and when they meet again after Max has bought the company shares and become a partner in the company, Margot is hurt, angry and can’t believe the man who broke her heart is back to do it all over again. The most infuriating part for her is that she is still enormously attracted to Max after all these years. As for Max, his initial plan was to steal the company out from under her and leave her ruined like her family left him. Marriage wasn’t in the cards and his sudden proposal masks an underlying truth – that he’s never gotten over Margot and wants her back in his life at any cost.
With this rocky start to their marriage, things take an unexpected twist when what should be an agreement in name only, a marriage of convenience, turns into a sensual and revealing honeymoon. Max whisks Margot off for a two week vacation, just the two of them after their wedding ceremony where they can no longer deny their attraction to each other. It also gives them a chance to work through their problems, discover what really happened those years long ago and makes them realize that this second chance may be the ticket to a happy ending. I loved how it all flowed together, how Max realizes that what he really wants it to make Margot happy and how they come to terms with past and present. It’s an exciting and sensual romance and an thoroughly entertaining read.
