Sea Glass Summer by Miranda Liasson: When Kit lost her husband, her life was put on pause. She moved back in with her parents and used their help to raise her son. Now, she is ready to take the next steps in her life, starting with finding her own place and selling the monstrosity that her husband had purchased for their home. When she goes to the house, the last thing she expects to find is her husband’s best friend working on it. She definitely rejected his offer to help the last time they spoke, so she has no idea why he is here or why he looks so good swinging a sledgehammer.

Alex promised his best friend that he would look out for Kit and her son, and he’s making good on that promise by helping to refinish the house that he bought. He tries to keep it a secret from Kit in order to avoid her wrath. When she finds out, she’s mad, but he refuses to throw in the towel. He’s surprised when she doesn’t kick him off the property, and then even more surprised when she offers him the garage apartment at her new rental when she finds him sleeping at the house.

When Alex takes Kit up on the housing offer, he is determined to help her as much as she needs to make life easier for her. His hidden love for her makes him want to help her when he sees how much she struggles. As the two of them spend more time together, they find that both have bottled up grief, and they’re the only two that understand exactly how each other feels.

Kit is such a strong mom. She wants what’s best for her son and is willing to do anything to help him. In the meantime, she has let herself go by the wayside. When she is with Alex, she finds herself not thinking of herself as a widow anymore, which is a breath of fresh air, but she doesn’t think she is ready to move on yet.

Alex’s harbored love for Kit has always gotten in the way of his relationship with her. He doesn’t want to make the wrong move with her especially after all these years. He doesn’t realize that he has come off as cold to her because of his attempt to hide his feelings. When he starts to open up to Kit, it shows her a completely new side of him. He harbors a lot of guilt and has to deal with it before he can get Kit to trust him completely.

Overall, the book was beautiful. The passion that builds between Kit and Alex leaves you feeling the complete desire between the two of them. I loved Kit’s reactions to Alex because they were so relatable as a reader. Honestly, I really hope to learn more about the characters in future books because they were integrated so well and made it easy to like them.

A moving, uplifting novel about motherhood, starting over, and an unexpected summer romance…

Kit Blakemore is ready to live again. After her husband died while serving in the military, she was in a haze of grief. Now she wants to reclaim her former self—finish her degree and find a better career to provide for their sweet little boy, Oliver. To do that, she’ll need to sell her late husband’s dilapidated Victorian in Seashell Harbor. But first, Kit intends to give Ollie the kind of unforgettable seaside summer she had growing up, making lifelong memories and friendships.

Of course, nothing goes exactly as she planned. Ollie is struggling with his confidence, and frankly, so is Kit. But everything changes when her husband’s best friend, Alex de la Cruz, returns to town, offering to help her renovate. She doesn’t expect Alex to temporarily move in…or for him to bond with Ollie…or for her numb heart to begin thawing. Slowly he’s helping Kit and Ollie heal, and it scares her to death.

Kit swore she wouldn’t leave herself open to the pain of loss again. But if she’s going to teach her son to be brave and move forward, Kit must first face her own fears.
