Secret Fling With The King by Susan Meier: Arthur Dragan has been with King Mateo Stepanov since Mateo was a young prince and Arthur was his nanny. Arthur now has the most important job in the kingdom as personal assistant to the king. Arthur is on two month leave after emergency surgery. Someone needs to replace him while he’s out for this extended time. The next person in line to be promoted is a woman, Jessica Smith. Things will have to be changed from the previous routine. King Mateo is big on gender equality.

The biggest problem is Jessica’s daughter Eleanore. Ten years ago there was a huge legal case where Eleanore had to testify against a famous American politician who was convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting her. Even if it’s been ten years, the press loves to bring up old scandals. Since Arthur didn’t post a press release about his surgery, no one really needs to know that Jessica will be taking the job.

Jessica does take the job after meeting with the king. Not only will she have to deal with multiple duties for the king, she will have to interact with his children. The king has been a widower for a while. The oldest two children are grown and have taken over many duties. Sabrina, the youngest, is rather rebellious and reckless. Mateo thinks perhaps he hasn’t had enough one on one interaction with her while being busy.

Jessica understands daughters since she raised one. Once the scandal with Eleanore broke, Jessica’s husband left them. Jessica stays busy with her temporary personal assistant job and becomes very competent with it. Mateo really appreciates all she does. All the time they spend together can’t help but stir attraction between them. How can they have any future but a forbidden fling and Jessica going back to her previous job after Arthur returns?

Even though this is basically an adult fairy tale of sorts, there are many real life issues explored. I appreciate that the hero and heroine are of a more mature age. Many of us how read romance these days are no longer in our twenties and like variety. I have read and enjoyed other books by author Susan Meier. Secret Fling With The King is the perfect novel to escape into and leave the turmoil of life behind.
